“End Nuclear Insanity Before Nuclear Insanity Ends Humanity.” ~llaw

Lloyd A. Williams-Pendergraft
Oct 06, 2025

On My Mind Today:

Today’s “Featured Story” — from “Politico” is a coincidentally timely addition to my LLAW’s NUCLEAR WORLD TODAY post from yesterday, supporting and amplifying what I had to say about the deadly future we may be ignorantly self-creating with “AI” and “All Things Nuclear”.

Yet we blindly seem to be bumbling forward for little more knowledge than an insane badly mistaken couple of typical thoughts in our heads — corporate wealth and future human comforts. I can only say that none of this will work as we foresee it because both “All Things Nuclear” and “Artificial Intelligence” will never give us what we expect of them, and both will usher us down the path to extinction.

I chose this story to illuminate its future gravity, but there is also an extremely important back-story occurring right now, today, relative to the immanent potential involving both nuclear power and nuclear war that I encourage anyone who comes across my Post today to read in addition to Today’s Featured Story.

‘Swarms of Killer Robots’: Why AI is Terrifying the American Military

A Q&A with a former Pentagon insider on the AI debates that could shape the future of national security.

By Calder McHugh10/06/2025 10:00 AM EDT

  • Calder McHugh is deputy editor of POLITICO Nightly.

AI technology is poised to transform national security. In the United States, experts and policymakers are already experimenting with large language models that can aid in strategic decision-making in conflicts and autonomous weapons systems (or, as they are more commonly called, “killer robots”) that can make real-time decisions about what to target and whether to use lethal force.

But these new technologies also pose enormous risks. The Pentagon is filled with some of the country’s most sensitive information. Putting that information in the hands of AI tools makes it more vulnerable, both to foreign hackers and to malicious inside actors who want to leak information, as AI can comb through and summarize massive amounts of information better than any human. A misaligned AI agent can also quickly lead to decision-making that unnecessarily escalates conflict.

“These are really powerful tools. There are a lot of questions, I think, about the security of the models themselves,” Mieke Eoyang, the deputy assistant secretary of Defense for cyber policy during the Joe Biden administration, told POLITICO Magazine in a wide-ranging interview about these concerns.

In our conversation, Eoyang also pointed to expert fears about AI-induced psychosis, the idea that long conversations with a poorly calibrated large language model could spiral into ill-advised escalation of conflicts. And at the same time, there’s a somewhat countervailing concern she discussed — that many of the guardrails in place on public LLMs like ChatGPT or Claude, which discourage violence, are in fact poorly suited to a military that needs to be prepared for taking lethal action.

Eoyang still sees a need to quickly think about how to deploy them — in the parlance of Silicon Valley, “going fast” without “breaking things,” as she wrote in a recent opinion piece. How can the Pentagon innovate and minimize risk at the same time? The first experiments hold some clues.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Why specifically are current AI tools poorly suited for military use?

There are a lot of guardrails built into the large language models that are used by the public that are useful for the public, but not for the military. For instance, you don’t want your average civilian user of AI tools trying to plan how to kill lots of people, but it’s explicitly in the Pentagon’s mission to think about and be prepared to deliver lethality. So, there are things like that that may not be consistent between the use of a civilian AI model and the military AI model.

Why is the tweak not as simple as giving an existing, public AI agent more leeway on lethality?

A lot of the conversations around AI guardrails have been, how do we ensure that the Pentagon’s use of AI does not result in overkill? There are concerns about “swarms of AI killer robots,” and those worries are about the ways the military protects us. But there are also concerns about the Pentagon’s use of AI that are about the protection of the Pentagon itself. Because in an organization as large as the military, there are going to be some people who engage in prohibited behavior. When an individual inside the system engages in that prohibited behavior, the consequences can be quite severe, and I’m not even talking about things that involve weapons, but things that might involve leaks.

Even before AI adoption, we’ve had individuals in the military with access to national security systems download and leak large quantities of classified information, either to journalists or even just on a video game server to try and prove someone wrong in an argument. People who have AI access could do that on a much bigger scale.

What does a disaster case for internal AI misuse look like?

In my last job at the Pentagon, a lot of what we worried about was how technology could be misused, usually by adversaries. But we also must realize that adversaries can masquerade as insiders, and so you have to worry about malicious actors getting their hands on all those tools.

There are any number of things that you might be worried about. There’s information loss, there’s compromise that could lead to other, more serious consequences.

There are consequences that could come from someone’s use of AI that lead them to a place of AI psychosis, where they might engage in certain kinds of behaviors in the physical world that are at odds with reality. This could be very dangerous given the access that people have to weapons systems in the military.

Watch: The Conversation

‘They’re causing real harm’: Kevin Hassett on the Dems’ shutdown strategy

There are also concerns with the “swarms of killer robots” people are worried about, which involve escalation management. How do you ensure that you’re not engaging in overkill? How do you ensure that the AI is responding in the way that you want? And those are other challenges that the military is going to have to worry about and get their AI to help them think through.

On that last point, we published a piece in POLITICO Magazine recently from Michael Hirsh in which he reported that almost all public AI models preferred aggressive escalation toward a nuclear war when presented with real-life scenarios. They didn’t seem to understand de-escalation. Has that been your experience in working with these tools?

I think one of the challenges that you have with AI models, especially those that are trained on the past opus of humans, is that the tendency toward escalation is a human cognitive bias already. It already happens without AI. So what you’re enabling with AI is for that to come through faster. And unless you’re engineering in some way to say, “Hey, check your cognitive biases,” it will give you that response.

So does the Pentagon need to develop its own AI tools?

I think that they need to be working on how to develop tools that are consistent with the ways that the Pentagon operates, which are different than the ways the civilian world operates, and for different purposes. But it really depends on which mission set we’re talking about. A lot of this conversation has been about AI around large language models and decision support. There’s a whole different branch of AI that the military needs to engage in, and it’s about navigating the physical world. That’s a totally different set of challenges and technologies.

When you think about the idea of unmanned systems, how do they navigate the world? That’s technology like self-driving cars. Those are inputs that are not the same as taking in large quantities of human text. They’re about: How do you make sense of the world?

Is there a general need for more understanding of the utility of AI in the military? What are some ways that high-ranking officials at the Pentagon misunderstand AI?

It’s not a fully baked technology yet, and so there are activities like moving consideration of AI into the research and development space for the Pentagon, which the Donald Trump administration did, that make a lot of sense. That allows you to do testing and work through some of these new features and develop these technology models in ways that refine them. This means that when they land on the desks of a wider range of Pentagon personnel, they’ve worked through some of these kinks.

What’s the way forward with AI tools when it’s so difficult to prevent misuse?

One of the things that we need to do going forward is to be much more specific about the particular missions for which we are thinking about adopting AI into the Pentagon. The Pentagon is a trillion-dollar enterprise, and it’s going to have a lot of business functions that’s like any other business in the United States — basic business functions like booking travel or payroll.

And then, there are areas that are more military-unique, and those may deserve more specialized study, because there is not this civilian ecosystem that is also involved in the testing and development of these technologies. The Pentagon may have to fund their own research into things like understanding unidentified objects coming toward the United States or robots that need to navigate a battlefield or making sense of lots of different strands of intelligence reporting.

On My Mind Today:

Are we really so ignorantly blind as to accept nuclear power plants springing up and spitting directly in the face of growing threats of nuclear war that, if begun, will likely end human and other life on planet Earth? Whether or not commercial nuclear power plants would play a role in a nuclear World War III, depends on whether they can be built and operational before such a war begins, the fatal end of which will end most likely in a matter of a few days, leaving only isolated remnants of human and animal life.

Nuclear power plants are already involved right now, today, in a faction or opening salvo of likely nuclear war. Russia has continually for nearly three years attacked a Ukraine nuclear power plant — the largest in Europe — and the rest of Europe and potentially the entire world — including Russia itself — are increasingly exposed, directly involved in a potential nuclear war that would span the entire globe once begun.

So why, oh why, is humanity suddenly endorsing the construction and eventual operation of “neighborhood” SMRs near our cities and towns beginning sometime in the next decade if we all make it that far. Foresight is certainly not a thoughtful tool in the preliminary evaluation of such an enterprise.

Oh, yeah, we need it, cannot do without it — evidently not so much to be warm and keep the lights on — but to produce enough nuclear power to allow major social media and technology companies to turn our intelligence and our functional usefulness as human beings into life’s second-string led by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and intelligent robots who would control us in a few years turning us into their slaves or, even more likely, trim us down to a few servants to serve them as needed. ~llaw

Van Buren County is a rural redoubt in southwestern Michigan, a quiet corner of a swing state. Pillow soft sand dunes shift and shape along the shores of Lake Michigan. And the county seat – Paw Paw – is named after a quintessentially Midwestern fruit.

“It is a beautiful natural environment with gorgeous sand dunes that you don’t see in other parts of the world,” says Daywi Cook, whose family has lived in this area for five generations. “A lot of folks like to live here because of the solitude.”

Covert Township’s tranquility seems to belie its place as the vanguard to a potential nuclear transformation. The Van Buren County township has been home to the Palisades Nuclear Plant since 1971. The aging plant was decommissioned in 2022 but is being brought back into service through an over $1 billion loan secured under the Biden administration’s Inflation Reduction Act, with the first installment provided by the federal government this year. In addition to reactivating the plant, the site is also expected to house the nation’s first small modular reactors (SMRs).

Small modular reactors are factory-built nuclear power plants that are much smaller than traditional reactors (typically 300 megawatts or less). The SMRs are usually designed to be mass-produced and shipped to sites for faster, less costly installation.

The future of energy in the U.S. may be unfolding in this unassuming corner of Michigan where the Holtec Corporation is constructing two SMR-300 units which will be co-located with the existing 800-megawatt Palisades plant. The SMRs are planned to be operational by the early 2030s.

“There are still some unknowns but Holtec has been inviting us into the conversation,” said Cook, who is the township supervisor. She says the area’s familiarity with nuclear energy and the plant’s safety record has gone a long way to assuage the county’s residents.

Holtec did not respond to a request for comment.

Cook is hoping the recommissioned legacy plant and the SMRs will give the county some needed economic stability which is guided largely by seasonal swings.

“We are known as the Catskills of Chicago. There are a lot of short-term rentals that boom in the summer,” Cook said, which she explained then sit empty in the winter. “It would be nice to have year-round stability,” Cook added.

Zach Morris, executive director of Market One, a local association of business and government leaders that promotes economic growth in Cass and Van Buren Counties, Michigan, says that the area is uniquely positioned to be the leading edge of the nation’s nuclear renaissance. Because of the existing plant, the nuclear knowledge is ready and in the workforce, and the area has ample power to make power.

Morris says the recommissioned legacy nuclear plant will employ 600 people, and the two SMRs will employ a combined 300 people with salaries averaging $107,000. “That is $32 million in payroll annually, resulting in significant money being spent in groceries, restaurants, and donations to non-profits,” Morris said. And with the area’s nuclear past, there’s been little opposition to the arrival of SMRs, which he pointed out have been around for awhile, used in the military for years in submarines and aircraft carriers. “This is not a new technology, but there has not been a need for it until now,” Morris said.

A Holtec SMR will provide enough power for 300,000 homes or a data center or two, a drop-in-the-bucket in the sating of demand.

“We have a national issue, it is a national crisis that we didn’t anticipate five years ago,” Morris said. “Five years ago nobody saw this coming. Their collective genius didn’t anticipate this,” he said of data centers coming online without enough power and people who don’t want to give up their AI, streaming services, or cameras. “That means we have to adapt to the crisis. SMRs are the future,” Morris said.

To illustrate how much the world of power generation has been upended in short order, Morris offers a stark comparison. “Five years ago we were worried about how we were going to put up with the demand from a 20 megawatt marijuana farm,” he said, referring to a planned cannabis operation, and adding, “that is a fraction of what the data centers are asking for.”

Big Tech’s role in nuclear comeback

People are using AI for everything from identifying the animal tracks in their backyard to analyzing 10 years of sales data for corporate reports. And this torrent of requests for AI is leading to a torrent of demand for data centers to do the complex computing needed for instant answers. And the demand for data centers — constructed by tech titans Google, Amazon, and others — has led to a torrent of demand for electricity.

While the industry works on smaller, scalable nuclear solutions, big tech is taking decommissioned legacy plants out of mothballs. Constellation Energy plans to restart the 835-MW Three Mile Island Unit 1 nuclear generating station in Pennsylvania in 2028, with Microsoft agreeing to buy electricity from the reactivated power plant to power their data centers. And Google recently entered into an agreement with Kairos Power and the TVA for a new nuclear plant.

Bill Gates has been among the tech titans leading the charge, investing $1 billion in the technology and co-founding TerraPower, which is building a next generation nuclear plant in Wyoming. Gate’s company also announced plans recently to explore building a nuclear facility in Kansas.

“Both fission and fusion are fundamental technologies for humanity to power everything we do. We’re on the cusp of massive breakthroughs, and it’s clearer now than even before: The future of energy is subatomic,” Gates wrote in Power Magazine this week.

Oklo, which OpenAI’s Sam Altman helped to take public before stepping back from his role as chairman in April, remains a highly speculative public stock market play on the nuclear potential, with no revenue or power purchase agreements, and is at least several years away from commercial operations. But its shares have boomed since its 2024 IPO.

Illustration of heightened security alerts following U.S. military strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.

On My Mind Today:

Has Trump’s ridiculous “secret” weekend attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities “poked the hornet’s nest”? And, if so, will the U.S. citizenry pay the price right here at home outside the scope of a military attempt to protect our country? The FBI seems to think so, and so do I.

Such errant ill-advised Trumpian U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, authorized by Donald Trump—with possible Netanyahu encouragement—on the weekend of June 21–22, 2025, known as “Operation Midnight Hammer” have without doubt solely created this potential world-wide catastrophe. The name itself seems “childish”, as if Trump, et al, thinks potential nuclear war is a “board game” we can all play on a card table in our living rooms after dinner.

Not only could Iran begin a severe organized secretive mission of non-nuclear attacks of all kinds on United States soil, they could also be building at this very moment, one or more uranium-based bombs similar or even much larger and more powerful than the one we dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6, 1945 specifically designed, intended, and directed for delivery to the USA in retaliation for Trump’s grossly huge mistake.

Then too, just an attempt to prevent any opposing effort of Iranian retaliation could easily put the world’s powers-that-be between a rock and a hard place and start WWIII in addition to Iran’s provoked attacks on the United States. ~llaw

Illustration of heightened security alerts following U.S. military strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.

The recent escalation in U.S.-Iran tensions has reignited concerns about the potential for retaliatory actions against American interests. Following U.S. military strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has issued warnings of heightened risks from Iranian entities or their supporters. This development has prompted a complex interplay of geopolitical and domestic security considerations, as agencies across the United States brace for possible repercussions. The situation underscores the volatile nature of international diplomacy and security, with potential impacts reaching beyond immediate military concerns.

Heightened Security Alerts Following Strikes

In the wake of U.S. military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, the FBI has alerted authorities about a potential increase in retaliatory threats. An internal memo reviewed by prominent media outlets highlights that groups linked to Iran have historically targeted U.S. interests following geopolitical events. The agency is urging vigilance, particularly around military facilities and individuals considered at risk for reprisal attacks. This comes as part of broader efforts to monitor and mitigate threats that may stem from Iran’s response to the strikes.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has also issued a terrorism bulletin, emphasizing a heightened threat environment in the United States. The bulletin identifies possible risks, including low-level cyberattacks by pro-Iranian hacktivists and more advanced operations from state actors. Such threats underline the multifaceted nature of modern conflicts, where cyber warfare and physical aggression are intertwined. U.S. agencies remain on high alert as they assess potential security challenges both domestically and internationally.

Geopolitical Implications and International Reactions

The U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear sites have stirred significant geopolitical ramifications, with President Donald Trump describing the attacks as a “very successful” operation. The decision came amid ongoing tensions between Israel and Iran, with Israel advocating for U.S. intervention to prevent Tehran from advancing its nuclear capabilities. Iran, however, maintains that its nuclear program is solely for civilian purposes. This conflict of narratives has fueled international debates over the legitimacy and implications of the strikes.

Iran’s retaliatory missile strike on the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, although thwarted by air defenses, marks a significant escalation. The incident has drawn reactions from global leaders, with concerns about potential disruptions to critical trade routes like the Strait of Hormuz. The international community is closely monitoring the situation, wary of broader conflict and the impact on global stability. Diplomats are cautioning against further escalation, advocating for diplomatic solutions to de-escalate tensions.

“Kim Jong Un Builds 5,000-Ton War Machine”: North Korea Launches Destroyer After Previous Ship Capsized While Naval Expansion Threatens Regional Stability

Domestic and International Security Concerns

The ongoing conflict between the U.S. and Iran is not only a matter of international politics but also a domestic security concern. The DHS has highlighted the possibility of violent extremist activities within the United States, spurred by Iranian calls for retaliation. The history of U.S.-Iranian tensions, particularly after the U.S. withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and the 2020 killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani, adds layers of complexity to the current security landscape.

Iran’s commitment to targeting U.S. officials perceived as responsible for Soleimani’s death remains a key concern. The rhetoric from Iranian leaders, pledging reciprocal action, heightens the sense of urgency among U.S. security agencies. The State Department has issued a “worldwide caution” alert, advising Americans to exercise vigilance overseas. This advisory reflects the broader implications of the conflict, affecting not only military personnel but also civilians and U.S. interests abroad.

“Warplanes Learn To Fly Alone”: Northrop Grumman Tests Vanguard Jet As Open Battlefield Lab For AI Combat Systems Under Beacon Program

Public Statements and Political Reactions

Public statements from political leaders and government officials provide insight into the evolving narrative around the U.S.-Iran conflict. The Department of Homeland Security, in its bulletin, warned of a “heightened threat environment” due to ongoing tensions. Vice President JD Vance, speaking on a national news program, emphasized the lack of diplomatic engagement by Iran, suggesting a potential for diplomatic reset despite recent hostilities.

President Trump’s remarks on social media, hinting at regime change in Iran, have sparked discussions about the future of U.S.-Iran relations. These statements, alongside those from Iranian officials, highlight the deeply entrenched positions that complicate diplomatic efforts. As the situation unfolds, the discourse around potential resolutions and the path forward remains a critical focus for policymakers and the public.

As the U.S. navigates the complexities of its relationship with Iran, the broader implications of recent military actions continue to unfold. The intersection of geopolitical strategy, domestic security, and international diplomacy raises questions about the future trajectory of U.S.-Iran relations. What diplomatic or strategic measures might best ensure stability and security in this volatile context?

'What's stopping us?' — Putin threatens to attack Ukraine's nuclear power plants

See the “Kiev Indep3endent” article posted below for image description and photo credit. ~llaw

On My Mind Today:

So this time, direct from the Kyiv media itself, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant “grid power” loss on the most recent the attack — the tenth — along with a possible new attack on Europe’s largest power plant by Russia’s military moves Europe and the globe closer to a possible nuclear catastrophe far beyond just Ukraine.

And there is also the recent drone attack on the “dead” but “dangerous” Chernobyl by Russia along with Putin’s threat to attack other nuclear power plants. Chernobyl alone should tell us to have never built another nuclear power plant anywhere on the planet.

Once again, going on ad infinitum, I have to ask this important question to all of you, including your government(s) and corporations, who continue to believe that we should go on adding nuclear power plants and refurbish older ones when, as I have said dozens of times in previous Posts, that nuclear power plants are, in times like these, little more than stationary nuclear weapons of mass destruction. What we should be doing is removing “All Things Nuclear” from any kind of existence in any form rather than adding the dirtiest and most dangerous substance on planet Earth on our lemming-like way to our own possible — if not probable — demise.

Evidently we are so blind to reality that we simply cannot see the “forest for the trees”. ~llaw

‘What’s stopping us?’ — Putin threatens to attack Ukraine’s nuclear power plants

Russian President Vladimir Putin threatened strikes on Ukrainian nuclear power plants at the Valdai International Discussion Club in the city of Sochi on Oct. 2.

Putin framed this potential move as a “mirror response,” claiming that Ukraine has been carrying out attacks near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which has been under Russian occupation since March 2022. He didn’t provide any evidence to support his claims.

“(People in Ukrainian-controlled territories) need to understand that if they keep playing with this dangerously, they still have operating nuclear power plants on their side. So what is stopping us from responding in kind? They should think about that,” Putin said.

His comments come as the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the largest nuclear power station in Europe, has been disconnected from the Ukrainian electricity grid for a record period of over a week, following multiple blackouts since the start of the full-scale war.

President Volodymyr Zelensky described the situation at the Zaporizhzhia plant as “critical” on Sept. 30. Diesel generators are now supplying power to the plant, but one has already failed, he said.

Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said on Oct. 2 that Russia deliberately cut power to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant as it’s preparing to reconnect the facility to its own energy system.

“Every action taken by Russia is not just a lethal risk, but also paves the way toward a catastrophe,” he said.

In the meantime, Putin claimed that the situation at the plant is “under control” and that the generators are supplying it with electricity.

Ukraine continues to demand the withdrawal of Russian forces from the plant and the establishment of a demilitarized zone around the facility, a proposal Russia has repeatedly rejected.

Russian attacks have also repeatedly threatened nuclear power plants located in Ukrainian-controlled territory.

In February, a Russian Shahed-type drone struck the New Safe Confinement over Chornobyl’s destroyed 4th reactor. The structure — built to contain radioactive material — was damaged, although no serious radiation leaks were caused.

As Moscow ramps up its attacks on energy infrastructure, a Russian drone also hit an energy facility in the town of Slavutych in Kyiv Oblast, causing a several-hour-long blackout at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant.

On My Mind Today:

Sometimes the most insignificant appearing news, threats, circumstances, changes, alterations, or upgrades can be the most significant actions to keep a close eye on —especially in a nuclear world. Keeping our eyes on relationships, especially war and even moreso on “nuclear war” apparently can seem unimportant and go forward with little or no concern about what is quietly going on until someone’s eyes are suddenly opened.

Such has long been the quiet, but long-suffering relationship between South and North Korea, and most of us are unaware these days of a slowly increasing sense of friction that has been catching my own eye from time to time having been a veteran who spent his overseas assignment in South Korea just four miles from the DMZ, aka the demilitarized zone between the two Koreas.

Although walking guard duty around the 4th Cavalry Division headquarters of the EUSA (8th Army Division) there was never a comfortable assignment — but we all took our turns with the knowledge that someone was occasionally shot dead by a North Korean sniper. During my time there, though, I was lucky enough to visit with North Korean officers and soldiers, share a luncheon, and have a feeling of comfort that I, and hopefully our headquarters compound, would never be a target.

But there have been “accidental” misguided bombings in North Korean villages, and of course high-level military evaluations, and most recently an important and serious North Korean war scenario and evaluation of nuclear war between the nations which, unfortunately the U.S. refused to respond to, which to my mind was a big mistake by our present administration, perhaps appearing to belittle North Korea’s government and military as ‘unimportant’. Obviously, this was a “snub” intended to look down on the North Korean government.

Fifty nuclear bombs in North Korea’s nuclear arsenal is nothing to be snubbed about, and just one dropped on South Korea would, without doubt, begin what would instantly develop into WWIII, or what you might call “armageddon”. ~llaw

South Korea Upgrades Surveillance Against Nuclear-Armed North

By Ryan Chan

China News Reporter

South Korea has decided to acquire military aircraft from the United States to enhance its surveillance capabilities amid the persistent threat from nuclear-armed North Korea.

Newsweek reached out to the North Korean Embassy in Beijing for comment via email.

Why It Matters

North Korea has refused to give up its nuclear weapons, estimated to number about 50 warheads, and has continued its missile development. The United States is committed to South Korea‘s security, having signed a mutual defense treaty with the country in 1953, following the Korean War.

In addition to developing weapons domestically, such as Hyunmoo-5 ballistic missiles, South Korea has relied on introducing advanced U.S.-made military hardware to build its armed forces, including F-35A stealth fighter jets and P-8 maritime patrol aircraft.

South Korea’s latest arms procurement comes as the Trump administration pressures allies and partners to increase defense spending by purchasing American weapons.

What To Know

South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency reported on Tuesday that the Defense Acquisition Program Administration has selected U.S. defense contractor L3Harris Technologies to supply airborne control aircraft as part of the country’s surveillance aircraft fleet.

The estimated cost for purchasing four Global 6500 aircraft, scheduled for delivery by 2032, is 3.87 trillion won ($2.82 billion), according to the report. They will supplement the current fleet of four Boeing E-7 airborne control aircraft operated by the Air Force.

The decision to expand South Korea’s fleet of airborne control aircraft was in response to what the report described as “growing aerial threats” from North Korea, which has developed self-exploding attack drones, and other unspecified neighboring countries.

China, which maintains a military presence in disputed waters near South Korea, has been rapidly building and modernizing its air power by developing advanced aircraft.

L3Harris Technologies also confirmed that it has been selected by South Korea to deliver aircraft equipped with advanced airborne early warning and control systems, saying the aircraft will provide continuous air surveillance and control capabilities.

According to the company, the Global 6500 is a business jet that has been modified, or what it calls “missionized,” with sensor systems capable of conducting intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions. As of July, two aircraft had been delivered to customers.

Given the need for affordable yet capable aircraft for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions, L3Harris Technologies stated in July that demand is growing to convert commercial aircraft by adding mission equipment and survivability features.

What People Are Saying

South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration said on Tuesday: “This project is expected to ensure round-the-clock aerial surveillance capabilities against enemy air threats during both wartime and peacetime, and to enable independent and efficient air control operations by the South Korean military.”

L3Harris Technologies said on Wednesday: “This project enhances the Republic of Korea Armed Forces’ ability to maintain continuous air surveillance and control capabilities in response to growing aerial threats.”

The Republic of Korea is the official name of South Korea.

What Happens Next

It remains to be seen whether South Korea will place additional orders for weapons from the U.S. as part of its military buildup to counter the threat from North Korea.

On My Mind Today:

We all know by now what fools Trump, who declared himself physically unfit for military life, and his comic-book warrior Hegseth made of themselves, dictating absolute ridiculous B.S. to the top U.S. generals stationed all around the world, taking them away from their dangerously real, and necessary, peace-keeping jobs.

No applause, no evident agreements, lots of annoyance, and nothing positive came from this showboat act by the most ridiculous and mindless U.S. president and his “military boy” in the entire history of the United States of America, imho.

There is no need to say more beyond these laugh-out-loud statements, so I will move on to the real world of life in the more serious “nuclear world” by taking an important look at the daily advancing scare of a possible nuclear reactor/plant meltdown regarding — for the 10th time — this self-same Russia/Ukraine situation rendering Europe’s larges nuclear power plant powerless from the loss of electricity (which oddly enough it was built to generate) and is running on emergency diesel fuel until the current loss of external power from normal power generation (the grid) until their power lines are restored. Russia says there is no problem; Ukraine and the rest of Europe are worried “half-to-death”, as they should be. ~llaw

Ukraine’s Zelenskyy says situation ‘critical’ at Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant

Ukrainian leader says the plant has been without power for seven days, the longest stretch since Russia’s 2022 full-scale invasion.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned that the situation at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is “critical” as the facility has been without power for seven days.

“It has been seven days now. There has never been anything like this before,” Zelenskyy said in his nightly address on Tuesday.

One of the diesel generators providing emergency power to the plant is no longer working, Zelenskyy said, a week after external power lines went down.

“Russian shelling has cut the plant off from the electricity network,” the Ukrainian leader said.

“This is a threat to everyone. No terrorist in the world has ever dared to do with a nuclear power plant what Russia is doing now.”

The outage is the longest the Russian-occupied plant has gone without power since Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

It is also the 10th time since the start of the war that the plant – the largest in Europe – has been disconnected from the power grid.

Russia seized control of Zaporizhzhia in the first weeks of the war, and the plant’s six reactors, which before the conflict produced about one-fifth of Ukraine’s electricity, were shut down after Moscow took over.

But the plant needs power to maintain cooling and safety systems, which prevent reactors from melting – a danger that could set off a nuclear incident.

Russian officials have not commented on the latest statements on conditions at the plant.

But Moscow and Kyiv have repeatedly accused each other of risking a potentially devastating nuclear disaster by attacking the site, and have traded blame over the latest blackout.

Rafael Grossi, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the United Nations’s nuclear watchdog, earlier this week decried the cutoff of the external power lines but assigned no blame to either side.

In a statement on Tuesday, Grossi said he was engaging with officials from both countries to restore offsite power to Zaporizhzhia as soon as possible.

“I’m in constant contact with the two sides with the aim to enable the plant’s swift re-connection to the electricity grid,” the IAEA chief said.

“While the plant is currently coping thanks to its emergency diesel generators – the last line of defence – and there is no immediate danger as long as they keep working, it is clearly not a sustainable situation in terms of nuclear safety,” he added.

“Neither side would benefit from a nuclear accident.”

IAEA monitors are stationed permanently at Zaporizhzhia and at Ukraine’s three other nuclear power stations.

“End Nuclear Insanity Before Nuclear Insanity Ends Humanity.” ~llaw

Lloyd A. Williams-Pendergraft
Sep 30, 2025

On My Mind Today:

Just a few days ago, I posted the most read daily LLAW’s NUCLEAR WORLD TODAY story — from my dear co-author and Canadian friend Amy Ramdass — that instantly became by far the most popular narrative ever in the 1st 1,060 Posts prior to today’s. So it is that I am reposting it once again today because even in its poetic style along with a bit of more modern concerns beyond the original authors’ presentation, they tell us just about all we need to know about who and what world leaders and rulers of today have become.

One recent definition from today is “Narcissistic Monsters”, which fits so many of the Posts from this blog over the last three years or so, which clearly points out that we are allowing the wrong kinds of people to control the masses in countries around the world, and each day it becomes more obvious that if we are to survive, along with much of all other life, we need to rid ourselves of such leadership as well as “All Things nuclear”. ~llaw

Today’s Featured Story:

Take your own pick from today’s “LLAW’s All Nuclear Daily Digest” nuclear worlds’ stories listed by category . . . because I am reposting Amy’s post here for those of you who may have missed it or would like to read it again . . .

The flowering of a spreading evil comes from the roots of a poisonous seed . . . ~llaw

On My Mind Today:

I have long wondered if any of us would exist today had we been armed the way we are these days in a war against the kind of future Hitler had in mind for humanity back in the 1940’s WWII.

I also wonder if we are fast-tracking today on the verge of repeating that history and if the final result will be a victory for the desired existential human cause. I do hope I am dead wrong, but I suspect this time around that the goals of power-crazed so-called “leaders” will be successful — not only because of the two original nuclear bombs that played a cruel but purposeful and final role then — but also the fact that there are nine power-crazed international or “leaders” or “rulers” whose nations have more than enough nuclear weapons of mass destruction to destroy all life on Mother Earth thousands of times over.

So it is that I — and millions of others who are alive, aware, alert, and awake — worry about the impending possibility of destroying ourselves along with the rest of life on planet Earth.

As food-for-thought I have borrowed a very important Facebook Post, rather than a current nuclear news story, from my dear Canadian friend and co-author of an 1880’s Old West Wyoming cowboy tale based on the insane reality of what overzealous self-important and self-aggrandized men can do without even a life-ending flinch to anyone who may feel — in their own wrong-headed, overzealous, demented minds — that their personal belongings, territory and its boundaries have been violated.

Hitler apparently felt that way, too, and so do some, if not all, of the “leaders” and their sycophants of today’s nine nations who can easily end life on planet Earth with little more than pressing a single button . . . ~llaw

Today’s Featured Story:

So here, for what it’s worth now and on into the future, with my deeply sincere thanks to my dear friend, Amy Indira Dio Ramdass, and previous co-author, is her thoughtful food-for-thought recent Facebook Post that we should carefully consider:

“Pastor Martin Niemöller (1892-1984) is on my mind.

He is remembered for “First They Came,” a poem… to show us how heavy (his remorse) weighed on his conscience…or to awaken humanity’s empathy.

Legend says that at first, he supported the Nazis, probably he also was antisemitic…until those muthafuckas came and took control of the churches ….and only then he dared to speak out but it was far too late.…”

The rest we know in his poem…

Would speaking earlier have spared him and countless others? Perhaps. A powerful voice with a congregation could have joined many smaller voices to oppose tyranny before it grew too strong.

Let this inspire me to not make any such similar mistakes…and this post is a start …. (for me to go boldly, bravely, badass-ly ever after)….of me adding my voice to the mix. And hoping against hope that we let go of our hate for each other NOW for civil war weakens our own system, distract us…..and there is definitely a lot of hate in my fb stream, enough to keep us all in Fear: fight, flight and freeze instincts…

Yikes. ~ Amy Indira Dio Ramdass

or with Amy’s edits recognizing today’s nihilistic world . . .

Children play amid the ruins of a school in Kharkiv, Ukraine.

On My Mind Today:

These kinds of Russian attacks in the “United Nations” story below are not conventional war by definition, but rather war crimes, ostensibly killing innocent civilians, including children, and potentially depriving cities, towns, and communities of electricity for heating homes and other facilities that are far and away outside the scope of the war definition. Such criminal attacks have been going on in Ukraine for more than four years, yet those Russian leaders who endorse and order such war crimes — e.g. President Vladimir Putin — who has been internationally charged with war crimes but has not been prosecuted.

It seems the global leadership role around the world is little more than a childish game of “tag” that I’m sure most all of us have played at one time or another in a school yard, a city park, or your own backyard. This inhumane irresponsibility of world “leaders” or “rulers” is a threat to every human-being on planet Earth and therefore other life as well. That threat is world-wide genocidal nuclear war.

In order for humanity to survive and protect ourselves from extinction we must unite as an international cooperative world of individuals dedicated to united self-governments everywhere, and to protect other life as well, we must, en-masse, denounce and force the purge of all leaders of militarily nuclear-armed countries and their nuclear weapons. ~llaw

In Ukraine, people across the country have been dealing with the aftermath of a massive Russian bombing raid that lasted into the early hours of Monday, reportedly killing four, including a teenage girl.

According to the Ukrainian authorities, the attack lasted around 12 hours and involved nearly 600 drones, 46 cruise missiles and five rockets.

“More lives have been lost…homes have been impacted [and] children are among the casualties,” said the UN aid coordination office, OCHA. Densely populated Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia were among the regions that came under attack that destroyed or damaged home and other public services.

The UN World Health Organization (WHO) reported on Sunday that a cardiology facility had also been hit in Kyiv, killing two.

Nuclear plant risks

In a related development, the Russia-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station continued to use emergency generators to power its six shutdown reactors and other essential nuclear safety and security functions, after suffering its tenth complete loss of offsite power supply last week.

In warning at the weekend, the UN International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said that the plant had enough spare fuel to last at least 10 days and that it was in contact with both sides to restore outside power as soon as possible.

The nuclear watchdog also underlined the “constant dangers” to nuclear safety last week after a drone was downed and detonated approximately 800 metres from the perimeter of Ukraine’s South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant.

An IAEA team on site reported that 22 unmanned aerial vehicles had been observed late Wednesday and early Thursday, some coming as close as half a kilometre from the site.

The team said that a crater measuring four metres square at the surface and one metre deep had been left by one downed drone. There were no reported casualties.

“Once again drones are flying far too close to nuclear power plants, putting nuclear safety at risk,” said Director General Grossi. “Fortunately, last night’s incident did not result in any damage to the South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant itself. Next time we may not be so lucky. I continue to urge both sides to show maximum military restraint around all important nuclear facilities,”

Winter threat grows

As winter comes, attacks on Ukraine by Russia have continued to impact energy infrastructure, cutting power to thousands of people.

In the first half of 2025, the UN and partners provided some form of assistance to 2.4 million people throughout the country, with a focus on helping front-line communities. Total needs are more than twice that number.

In addition to significant access challenges in Russian-occupied territories, the humanitarian response remains stretched by the sharp increase in attacks in recent months which has caused new displacement and created additional needs.

The 2025-2026 Winter Response Plan which launched in July seeks $280 million and is about 40 per cent funded.

In line with the reprioritized relief plan for Ukraine – the result of reduced funding for humanitarian work globally – aid workers are focusing on four deliverables:

  • assist vulnerable front-line residents,
  • support evacuations,
  • deliver emergency post-strike assistance and
  • help internally displaced people.

OCHA stressed that relief assistance continues to be provided in areas outside the priority focus, particularly in western and central Ukraine.

On My Mind Today:

The entire world is full of grief and hatred, threatening not just war, but nuclear war at a time when we ought to clearly know and understand that humanity and most other life cannot continue to exist if an actual nuclear war should begin in earnest without reservations or thoughtful consideration.

With every day and every nuclear threat the likelihood of some power-crazed and ill-advised “leader” or “ruler” of a nuclear armed country — who believes he is some kind of savior to somehow satisfy his deranged ego — we are facing another step toward the end of perhaps all life on planet Earth.

And, yes, it is possible that there are nations, including the United States, whose single “leader” or “ruler” can push a single button and end it all. We all ought to know better . . . ~llaw

MOSCOW – The Kremlin on Sept 28 dismissed threats by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that Kremlin officials should know where the bomb shelters were, saying that Ukraine was losing the war and that its negotiating position was worsening.

Mr Zelensky suggested to news outlet Axios that the centres of Russian power, like the Kremlin, were potential targets, saying that Kremlin officials “have to know where the bomb shelters are”.

“Zelensky is trying to demonstrate to the Europeans, who now act as the breadwinners, that he is such a brave soldier,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told state television.

“Meanwhile, the state of affairs at the front indicates the opposite. With every passing day, the situation for Ukraine is inexorably deteriorating.

“And every day, Ukraine’s negotiating positions are inexorably deteriorating.”

Russia controls 114,918 sq km, or about 19 per cent of Ukraine, and has taken 4,729 sq km of Ukrainian territory in the past year, according to the pro-Ukrainian DeepState map project.

When asked directly by state television’s Kremlin correspondent Pavel Zarubin on how the Kremlin would perceive an attack on the centre of Russian power, Mr Peskov said that “it’s better not to even talk about it”.

On My Mind Today:

The constant contradictions and questionable characterizations of this off-again-on-again intentional or forced lack of safety and protection of the critical electrical feed to Ukraine’s long shut-down Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant tells us how the facts of Russia’s purposes and plans for the plant’s future are unclear— not unlike all nuclear-armed countries’ leaderships, including our own here in the U.S. — nothing more than intentional constant lies to the rest of us to keep themselves in power. Our own “president” even tried several months ago to get involved by proposing that the U.S. take over the plant’s occupation but that idea was quickly disposed of, thankfully.

This is the 10th time the largest power power plant in Europe has been — no doubt for questionable and indefinite reasons — shut down by attacks in various ways by the Russian military and the Russian operators who control the plant itself. Are these attacks scare tactics? Or are they a strategic part of the ongoing Russia/Ukraine war? Today’s nuclear power plants are also tantamount to stationary nuclear weapons of mass destruction — especially in times of war.

Whatever these attacks are, they are dangerous to all of the European continent. Ukraine has made it clear that the attacks may be a forerunner to restarting the nuclear power plant, which would be a grave and dangerous decision by Russia for all kinds of reasons because the reactors at the plant are unsafe both for cooling controls and functionality having been shut down for years and the Russian dynamiting of the dam that supplied the necessary water for cooling.

The message here is that the general population of the world — including especially or at least the United States and Russia — should find a way to remove their leaders, administrators, and sycophants from all governmental responsibilities, reasons, and purposes. But of course that will never happen, but . . .

It seems to me that if we don’t promptly take this action that we will all be following those lead “lemmings” over similar various and sundry cliffs to our our own “armageddon” — or maybe it will be just one all at once. ~llaw

Ukraine nuclear plant enters fifth day on emergency power as Zelenskyy announces $90B arms deal

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine’s Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant entered its fifth day running on emergency generators Saturday, prompting mounting safety concerns.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, meanwhile, announced a $90 billion arms agreement with the United States and criticized Hungary for carrying out “dangerous” intelligence-gathering drone activities over Ukraine.

External power to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Europe’s largest, has been cut for more than four days in a record outage at the six-reactor facility on the front line of the war, Greenpeace Ukraine warned Saturday.

Emergency diesel generators are being used to power cooling and safety systems after the final power line was severed on Tuesday, according to the U.N. nuclear watchdog. Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, met with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday, but the external power supply was not restored.

The reactor core and used nuclear fuel must be cooled to prevent them overheating and triggering dangerous meltdowns like the ones that occurred in 2011, when an earthquake and tsunami hit the Fukushima plant in Japan. The U.N. atomic watchdog has repeatedly warned of the possibility of a radiation catastrophe like the one at Chernobyl, about 480 kilometers (300 miles) to the northwest, where a reactor exploded in 1986.

Ukrainian officials confirmed the severity of the situation. Minister of Energy Svitlana Hrynchuk told The Associated Press that “the plant remains in blackout mode, which is a significant violation of the conditions for its normal operation,” marking the 10th such incident since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. The cause, she said, was another shelling by the Russians, which damaged the only power transmission line supplying the plant from the Ukrainian energy system.

The Russian-controlled Telegram channel for the plant said Saturday that “sufficient diesel fuel reserves are available on-site to ensure long-term autonomous operation of the generators.”

A radiation and nuclear energy specialist at Greenpeace Ukraine, Jan Vande Putte, said “emergency diesel generators are considered the last line of defense, used only in extreme circumstances.”

“These are undoubtedly the most serious and important events since the beginning of the occupation of the ZNPP by Russia in March 2022,” he said.

Images suggest Russia may be trying to restart one reactor

Putte said that it was Russia’s “deliberate actions” that led to the plant’s disconnection from the external power grid of Ukraine. He warned that the development advanced Russia’s state-owned nuclear energy company Rosatom’s “long-standing goal” to “connect to the illegally occupied power grid in Zaporizhia and Donetsk regions and restart the nuclear reactor.”

New satellite analysis by Greenpeace Ukraine suggests that Russia may be positioning to restart at least one reactor despite high-risk wartime conditions. The environmental group said Russian engineers are building 125 miles (201 kilometers) of power lines connecting substations in the occupied cities of Melitopol and Mariupol, with construction beginning in December 2024.

According to Greenpeace’s analysis, Russia has also completed construction of a new water supply system for the plant’s cooling pond and deliberately damaged a 750-kilovolt power line that had connected the facility to Ukraine’s electrical grid.

The Associated Press could not independently verify Greenpeace Ukraine’s analysis.

The plant has been held by Russia since Moscow’s invasion in 2022. Its six reactors remain fueled with uranium though they are in a so-called cold shutdown — meaning nuclear reactions have stopped. However, the plant relies on external electricity to keep its reactor cool and power other safety systems. That external power has been cut multiple times in the war, forcing the plant to rely on diesel generators on site.

The city of Zaporizhzhia, about 440 kilometers (275 miles) southeast of Kyiv, is held by Ukraine and attacks have occurred around the plant as the front line is close. The IAEA rotates staff through the facility to check the plant’s safety and offer its expertise.

Zelenskyy addresses arms deal and regional tensions

Zelenskyy detailed Saturday at a press briefing in Kyiv what he called a “mega deal” for weapons purchases from the United States, with technical meetings beginning in late September. The $90 billion package includes both the major arms agreement and a separate “drone deal” for Ukrainian-made drones that the U.S. will purchase directly.

“We discussed and agreed on the main points with the President (Trump). Now we are moving on to practical implementation,” Zelenskyy said, adding that Ukraine had provided detailed specifications of its military needs to the U.S., including requests for long-range weapons systems.

Zelenskyy also criticized Hungarian drone activity over Ukraine, saying Ukrainian intelligence tracked of at least one drone. “I believe they are doing very dangerous things — very dangerous things, first and foremost for themselves,” Zelenskyy said.

He said that intelligence services had documented the drone’s movement with photos and electronic tracking, though he did not elaborate on what “Hungarian intelligence is studying on the territory of Ukraine.”

Posting on Facebook on Friday, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said the Ukrainian president “lost his mind” and was “seeing things.”

Hungary, led by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, has maintained close ties with Russia and has been critical of military aid to Ukraine.

Zelenskyy also disclosed that an Israeli Patriot air defense system has been operating in Ukraine for the past month, with two additional Patriot systems expected to arrive in the fall.

“The Israeli (Patriot) system is operating in Ukraine. Already a month, it’s been working for one month,” he said, declining to provide further details about the air defense deployments. Israel’s Defense Ministry refused to comment.
