“End Nuclear Insanity Before Nuclear Insanity Ends Humanity” ~llaw

Lloyd A. Williams-Pendergraft

Aug 25, 2025

On My Mind Today:

When are we going to admit, as I have been preaching for years, that nuclear power plants are both offensive and defensive weapons of nuclear war in addition to their own extremely dangerous nuclear liabilities? Why would we continue to operate any existing nuclear power plants and build more, given these facts?

We are obviously in a state of denial, and few leaders or executives of any kind — political, military, or corporate commercial heads — seem to understand that this is a very, very, serious problem that is not going to go away as long as we continue to have any kind of access to any and all things nuclear.

Nuclear power plants are not just victims of the usual offensive attacks of an in-situ innocent nuclear facility to be defended only from such attacks; they are stationery nuclear offensive weapons themselves, and all militaries who have anything to do with war clearly know this. I have written often that a nuclear power plant is a weapon of mass destruction in any kind of nuclear war because nuclear bombs dropped on a nuclear power plant can be considered to be a “two-for-one” or as similarly destructive as the original bomb that was used to attack the stationery plant, spreading its radiation around the entire global atmosphere just as the aftermath of a nuclear bomb will do after it has created its original mayhem.

The following abridged statement from the following article from “PBS” the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Association) by UN director-general, Rafael Mariano Grossi, who said that “every nuclear facility must be protected at all times.”, the nuclear watchdog for the United Nations, wasn’t talking about one attack on one nuclear plant. He was talking about ALL nuclear power plants everywhere on planet Earth.

I have to wonder if we will ever stop such a lemming-like march toward mass extermination . . . ~llaw

Moscow says Kyiv has struck a nuclear power plant as Ukraine marks Independence Day

World Aug 25, 2025 12:34 PM EDT

Russia accused Ukraine on Sunday of launching drone attacks that sparked a fire at a nuclear power plant in its western Kursk region overnight, as Ukraine celebrated 34 years since its independence.

Russian officials said several power and energy facilities were targeted in the overnight strikes. The fire at the nuclear facility was quickly extinguished with no injuries reported, according to the plant’s press service on Telegram. While the attack damaged a transformer, radiation levels remained within normal ranges.

The United Nations’ nuclear watchdog said it was aware of media reports that a transformer at the plants had caught fire “due to military activity,” but hadn’t received independent confirmation. It said its director-general, Rafael Mariano Grossi, said that “every nuclear facility must be protected at all times.”

Ukraine did not immediately comment on the alleged attack.

Firefighters also responded to a blaze at the port of Ust-Luga in Russia’s Leningrad region, home to a major fuel export terminal. The regional governor said approximately 10 Ukrainian drones were shot down, with debris igniting the fire.

Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed its air defenses intercepted 95 Ukrainian drones over Russian territory overnight into Sunday.

Russia fired 72 drones and decoys, along with a cruise missile, into Ukraine overnight into Sunday, Ukraine’s air force said. Of these, 48 drones were shot down or jammed.

Another wartime Independence Day

The incidents occurred as Ukraine marked Independence Day, commemorating its 1991 declaration of independence from the Soviet Union. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered remarks in a video address from Kyiv’s Independence Square, emphasizing the nation’s resolve.

“We are building a Ukraine that will have enough strength and power to live in security and peace,” Zelenskyy said, calling for a “just peace.”

“What our future will be is up to us alone,” he said, in a nod to the U.S.–Russia summit in Alaska earlier in August, which many feared would leave Ukrainian and European interests sidelined.

“And the world knows this. And the world respects this. It respects Ukraine. It perceives Ukraine as an equal,” he said.

U.S. special envoy Keith Kellogg was in attendance at Independence Day celebrations in Kyiv, during which Zelenskyy awarded him the Ukrainian Order of Merit, of the 1st degree.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived in Kyiv on Sunday morning for meetings with Zelenskyy.

“On this special day — Ukraine’s Independence Day — it is especially important for us to feel the support of our friends. And Canada has always stood by our side,” wrote Andriy Yermak, Zelenskyy’s chief of staff.

Military aid and prayers for peace

In a joint news conference with Zelenskyy, Carney said Canada will invest 2 billion Canadian dollars ($1.5 billion) in new military assistance for Ukraine to boost its army and provide urgently needed weapons.

Zelenskyy said the two leaders were considering the presence of Canadian forces on the ground in Ukraine as part of a reassurance force.

Norway announced significant new military aid Sunday, pledging about 7 billion kroner ($695 million) for air defense systems. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store said Norway and Germany are jointly funding two Patriot systems, including missiles, with Norway also helping procure air defense radar.

Pope Leo XIV prayed Sunday for peace in Ukraine as he marked the country’s Independence Day with a special appeal during his weekly noon blessing. He said the faithful were joining Ukrainians “asking that the Lord give peace to their martyred country.”

Leo also sent a telegram to Zelenskyy, which the Ukrainian leader posted on X along with similar notes from other world leaders.

In the letter, Leo assured his prayers for all Ukrainians who are suffering, and wrote: “I implore the Lord to move the hearts of people of good will, that the clamor of arms may fall silent and give way to dialogue, opening the path to peace for the good of all.”

A war of attrition

Meanwhile, Russia’s troops continued their push in eastern and northern Ukraine, where Russia claimed Saturday that its forces had seized two villages in the Donetsk region. The Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine’s Defense Ministry said Sunday that Ukraine had taken back control of the village of Novomykhailivka, also in the Donetsk region.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said Sunday that 146 Russian servicemen had been returned from Ukraine, in exchange for the same number of Ukrainian servicemen. The ministry said the latest exchange also included eight residents of Russia’s Kursk region, which was subject to a surprise Ukrainian incursion in August 2024, who were returned to Russia after being held in Ukraine.

Shortly after the Russian announcement, Zelenskyy said “our people are coming home.” He said that those being exchanged included members of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the National Guard, the State Border Guard Service and civilians. “Most of them had been in captivity since 2022,” he said.

Zelenskyy did not confirm the number of prisoners involved in the exchange.

End Nuclear Insanity Before Nuclear Insanity Ends Humanity” ~llaw

Lloyd A. Williams-Pendergraft

Aug 22, 2025

On My Mind Today:

This is a wait and see situation with the three European nations — France, Britain, and Germany — but the talks are important to see how Europe feels about Iran’s future nuclear programs, including uranium enrichment and one other important reason.

That reason is to see how the USA and Trump respond to any agreement that may or may not be agreed to. as well as Israel’s influence and dependence on Trump.

My concerns are, as usual, that Trump/Netanyahu will interfere with any agreements that may be forthcoming and inherent inference and objections from Trump, which means he would likely jump right into the middle of the talks, creating an end result of little or no progress over an issue that never should have been an issue in the first place. ~llaw

Iran and three major European powers have agreed to resume nuclear talks next week, even as the threat of revived sanctions looms.

Iranian state media reported on Friday that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held a call with his French, British and German counterparts, during which they agreed deputy ministers would meet on Tuesday.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul confirmed the talks, warning that Europe was prepared to re-impose United Nations sanctions under the so-called “snapback” mechanism unless Iran committed to a verifiable and lasting deal. “Time is very short and Iran needs to engage substantively,” he said.

According to Iranian outlets, Araghchi rejected the threat, accusing the European trio of lacking “legal and moral competence” to trigger snapback sanctions and warning of consequences if they did so.

The three European governments, backed by the United States, have accused Tehran of advancing uranium enrichment in violation of international commitments and say its programme could be used to develop nuclear weapons.

End Nuclear Insanity Before Nuclear Insanity Ends Humanity” ~llaw

On My Mind Today:

This is a wait and see situation with the three European nations — France, Britain, and Germany — but the talks are important to see how Europe feels about the Iran’s nuclear programs, including uranium enrichment and one other reason.

That reason is to see how how the USA and Trump respond to any agreement that may or may not be agreed to. as well as Israel’s influence on Trump.

My concerns are, as usual, that Trump/Netanyahu will interfered with any agreements that may be forthcoming and inherent inference and objections from the Trump, which would mean he would likely jump right into the middle of the talks, creating and end result of little or no progress over an issue that never should have been an issue in the first place. ~llaw

Iran rejects sanctions threats before renewed nuclear talks with Europe

Iran and European countries agree to resume nuclear talks next week despite threats of unilateral sanctions.

Russia is facing “colossal threats” that mean it must continuously improve its nuclear weapons “shield,” the chief of the state atomic energy agency warned.

Why It Matters

Nuclear rhetoric and threats have increased over the almost three-and-a-half years since Putin put Russia’s nuclear deterrence forces on high alert as Moscow’s forces poured into Ukraine in early 2022.

This warning comes less than a week after President Donald Trump met Russia’s Vladimir Putin in Alaska for talks aimed at ending Moscow’s war in Ukraine.

What To Know

The director of Rosatom, Alexey Likhachev, in comments published on Thursday, August 21, referred to Russia’s nuclear forces as both a shield and a sword.

“Now, in the current geopolitical moment, it is a time of colossal threats to the existence of our country,” said Likhachev, Russian state news agency RIA reported.

“Therefore, the nuclear shield—it is also the sword—is a guarantee of our sovereignty…Today we understand that the nuclear shield in the coming years must only be improved,” Likhachev said, originally in Russian.

He did not elaborate on the planned improvements.

Russia has the world’s largest arsenal of nuclear weapons and has in recent years modernized it to include hypersonic missiles, which Moscow says can penetrate Western air defense systems.

The U.S. is developing a new space-based missile defense shield that Trump has called the “Golden Dome.”

The British defense think tank, the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), said in a report this month that Russia has a “strong incentive” to use more destructive nuclear weapons as Western militaries build up their missile arsenals and improve their air defenses.

End Nuclear Insanity Before Nuclear Insanity Ends Humanity” ~llaw

On My Mind Today:

Today seems like a good day — as nuclear news goes — for a rare “human interest” story from Canadian author Michael Erskine about one man’s — even older than I am — opposition to “all things nuclear”.

The article makes me wish for more detail, but it is a heart-warming down-to-earth story about his reaction as a young Canadian farmer to the American bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, on August 6th and 9th, 1945.

96-year-old reflects on Hiroshima anniversary

KAGAWONG—It has been quite the journey for anti-nuclear activist Ed Burt whose lifelong passion has been to sound the alarm on our complacency about nuclear power. On the advent of the 80th anniversary of the only time a nuclear bomb has been used in combat, The Expositor caught up with Mr. Burt to chat about his memory of that day, and how that event has coloured his experience ever since.

Mr. Burt was a 15-year-old when the news of dropping nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki came across on the radio in 1945—and this was to have a lasting, in fact lifelong, impact on the young Haweater.

“It did, it really had an impact on me, and it still does,” said Mr. Burt. “I was going on 16 and we lived on a farm on Poplar Road, just three miles outside Gore Bay.”

Mr. Burt was sitting, ears glued to the family radio, eager to learn of news from the front. These were the days without the internet or even television. News travelled slowly in those days and the first reports of the bombings were actually reported in newspapers. Radio broadcasts soon followed.

The bombing occurred at 8:15 am, on August 6, 1945. Specially modified B-29 bombers of the US Army Air Force dropped “Little Boy” on Hiroshima, levelling it for all intents and purposes and by the end of 1945, between 90,000 and 166,000 human beings had died as a result of the blast and its after affects. On August 9, 1945 a second bomb, “Fat Man,” was dropped on the city of Nagasaki, bringing the butcher’s bill to approximately 210,000.

The reason for the uncertainty about the casualty numbers is illustrated by a conversation Mr. Burt had many years later with a Japanese educator.

“He was a little Japanese guy after the war,” recalled Mr. Burt. “He was the principal of a girls’ school in Hiroshima when the bomb dropped that morning.” The students were in the midst of their morning prayers when the bomb blast hit.

“When he regained consciousness, the principal was buried in rubble and had to claw his way to the surface,” said Mr. Burt. “He looked out across the landscape that had been Hiroshima and it was just a wasteland.”

“I don’t know how many days he spent searching for his girls in the school,” said Mr. Burt. “He didn’t find any of them alive. He did find enough of six to identify them.”

The principal himself had burns marks all over his body. “Somehow, he survived it,” said Mr. Burt. “It is a good example of what happened. Here were all these girls in grade school all praying when they got hit. It wasn’t about killing the officials who started the war and continued it. It was little girls in school.”

Mr. Burt contends that the bombing of Hiroshima was more about testing the bomb than in ending the war. “There is evidence the war was just about over,” he said. “It would have been over fairly soon.” The contention at the time, and for many years after, was that the bombings saved thousands of Allied soldiers’ lives.

For his part, at the young age of 15 (going on 16), Mr. Burt found himself horrified at the carnage.

Out of the horror, death and maiming an accelerated growth of plants followed the blast and devastation. Oleander (Nerium) is the official flower of the city of Hiroshima because it was the first to bloom again after the explosion of the atomic bomb.

But although the Allied populations knew about the bombings, it was not until the end of the occupation that the Japanese public learned the truth of what happened as the occupation forces kept a strong lid on the press in Japan.

Response to the civilian tragedy was severely lacking. The first simple emergency dwellings were not provided until 1946.

Much has been made of the American Manhattan Project and the immense investment made by the US in the development of the bomb, but much less is known of the British and Canadian contributions to that story. The British scientific community played a key role in the race to build a nuclear bomb, but it could not have been possible without the uranium resources hauled through countless rivers by Metis and other Indigenous porters in 200-pound sacks from the far north.

The uranium was then processed at the Eldorado refinery at Port Hope. Without Canadian resources and effort, the production of those lethal weapons would have been delayed, probably for years.

Mr. Burt’s antipathy to all things nuclear does not stop at the creation of bombs, however. He points to the impact of cancers caused by radiation treatments and the incredible length of time that spent nuclear fuel remains deadly to human life as examples of why humanity should step back from those doomsday materials and the potential leakage into our freshwater resources that takes place at locations such as the uranium refining facility on the North Channel, Cameco near Blind River.

He points to the numbers of cancer cases that have surfaced since the 1950s and suggests that there is no coincidence. “It is a silent killer,” he said. He himself has been battling cancer.

The issue is only getting worse with time, he notes.

“I read in the papers the other day that China has 66 new nuclear power plants planned for the future,” he said.

Mr. Burt has put his money where his mouth is over the years fighting against nuclear power. “I darn near lost my farm over it,” he said. He notes that he largely funded his battle through his own resources. “Spent so much money and time over it.”

Along with a group of “regular people,” Mr. Burt has had some successes and he said that he wouldn’t take any of it back. But he notes that their success was somebody else’s loss. “We might keep it out of our back yards,” he said, “but it ends up in somebody else’s yard. The situation hasn’t changed, it just keeps getting worse.”

Mr. Burt will be turning 96 in a couple of weeks, but he remains adamant. “I haven’t changed my mind one bit,” he said.

Trump On Hot Mic: ‘I Think Putin Wants To Make A Deal For Me’

French President Emmanuel Macron has warned that the global credibility of the United States and its NATO allies is on the line in Ukraine, as U.S. President Donald Trump attempts to end the Russian invasion once and for all.

Why It Matters

Macron made the comment after talks in Washington on Monday between Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the leaders of Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, the European Union and NATO, following up on Trump’s talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday.

While no agreement has been reached to end the more than three-year war, Monday’s gathering laid the groundwork for a long-anticipated trilateral meeting between Trump, Zelensky and Putin.

Macron’s warning about the credibility of the U.S. and its allies is a reminder of the far-reaching implications of the peace effort that Trump is promoting.

What To Know

Macron, in an interview with NBC News, said that how the United States and its allies handled the war in Ukraine would have global consequences for their credibility.

“What’s happening in Ukraine is extremely important for Ukrainian people, obviously, but for the whole security of Europe, because we speak about containing a nuclear power, which decided just not to respect international borders anymore,” he said.

“And I think it’s very important for your country because it’s a matter of credibility,” he said. “The way we will behave in Ukraine will be a test for our collective credibility in the rest of the world.”

Macron said Trump was confident he could reach a deal to end the war in Ukraine, which he welcomed while stressing that any agreement must not have negative consequences for Ukraine and its European allies.

“My point … is to be sure that this deal is not detrimental to Ukraine and Europe,” Macron said.

“All of us, we want a deal, and we want a peace deal. But we want to make sure that this peace, and so this deal, will be something which will allow the Ukrainians to recover their country and live in peace, to be sure the day after this peace deal that they will have sufficient deterrence power not to be attacked again, and to be sure—for the Europeans—that they will live in peace and security,” he said.

But the French president appeared less upbeat about Putin’s attitude to ending the full-scale invasion Russia launched in 2022.

“When I look at the situation and the facts, I don’t see President Putin very willing to get peace now,” he said, adding, “But perhaps I’m too pessimistic.”

Macron said he still hoped for a ceasefire even though Trump said after meeting Putin on Friday that a ceasefire was not an essential step toward a deal.

“It’s impossible for a Ukrainian president and Ukrainian officials to have talks about peace as their country is being destroyed and as their civilians are being killed,” Macron said, adding that security guarantees for Ukraine were vital.

“If you make any peace deal without security guarantees, Russia will never respect its words, will never comply with its own commitments,” Macron said.

Macron also said that in the absence of progress, Russia should be hit with more sanctions.

“I’m very much in favor of the fact that if, at the end of the day, there is no serious progress during the bilateral, or if there is a refusal of the trilateral meeting and, or if the Russians don’t comply with this approach, yes, we have to increase the sanctions, secondary and primary sanctions, in order to increase the pressure on the Russians to do so,” he said, according to a transcript of the interview provided by NBC.

What People Are Saying

French President Emmanuel Macron told NBC: “Your president, indeed, is very confident about the capacity he has to get this deal done, which is good news for all of us and can break this—I would say this daily killings, which are the responsibility of the Russian aggressor. So I think it’s great news. My point—and this is why we’ve worked so hard during the past few months and we need this convergence—is to be sure that this deal is not detrimental to Ukraine and Europe.”

What Happens Next

Trump has established a two-week timeline for determining diplomatic progress, saying both sides would soon know “whether or not we’re going to solve this or is this horrible fighting going to continue.”

The proposed Putin-Zelensky meeting is expected to precede trilateral discussions that include Trump, though specific timing and location remain undetermined. Russian officials have indicated a willingness to continue direct negotiations, but full agreement on meeting parameters has not been confirmed.

End Nuclear Insanity Before Nuclear Insanity Ends Humanity” ~llaw

Lloyd A. Williams-Pendergraft

Aug 18, 2025

On My Mind Today:

As if reading from this Post below . . . and despite the kinds of tolls on human and other life already taken — including open air atomic bomb testing from the Marshall Islands, to the same at Nevada’s Area51, to the reality of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, killing more than a hundred thousand innocent civilians to end WWII, we continue to build our world-wide nuclear arsenals in case nuclear WWIII is necessary for reasons beyond our human ken.

Even with these catastrophes and more, we still want to build more nuclear power plants to make ourselves more millionaires and billionaires and seek more “comfort” for our commercial and private selves with more and more electricity, not to mention out-of-control nuclear waste, and, perhaps worst of all, continue to add to the already over-gorged world(s) of nuclear weapons of mass destruction that are capable of destroying life on planet Earth many times over simply because we don’t trust our neighbors.

So it is that Robert Oppenheimer and those others of the Manhattan Project along with the high-placed others who made the critical decisions were then — but are not now — the only ones who are guilty, or soon could be, of the dark guilt of Oppenheimer’s remorseful self-revelation, “I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.” ~llaw

My sincere thanks to Michelle UluOla for relating the following major example of what nuclear radiation can do and does, by neglectful, accidental, or intentional occurrences even without the devastation of nuclear war:

Reports like this never made it into our history books, and this is just the tip of the proverbial ice berg.

🤬

And as always, those who created the terror and destruction, shrug later and say “Oops,” and never do anything to clean up or prevent more of it.

😭

In 1965, the “father of the atomic bomb, Robert Oppenheimer, recalled the moment this way: ‘We knew the world would not be the same. A few people laughed, a few people cried. Most people were silent. I remembered the line from the Hindu scripture, the Bhagavad Gita; Vishnu is trying to persuade the Prince that he should do his duty and, to impress him, takes on his multi-armed form and says, “Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.” I suppose we all thought that, one way or another.’

Truly heartbreaking. In July 1945, a group of thirteen-year-old girls went camping in America, swimming in a river near Ruidoso, New Mexico. The girl pictured at the front is Barbara Kent. Unbeknownst to them, nearby the Manhattan Project had just detonated a nuclear bomb as a test…

Kent later described that day:

“We were all just shocked… then suddenly, a huge cloud appeared overhead, along with strange lights in the sky,” Kent recalled. “It even hurt our eyes to look up. The whole sky turned strange, as if an intense sun had come out.” A few hours later, white flakes began falling from the sky. Excited, the girls put on their swimsuits and played in the river amid the flakes. “We grabbed the white flakes, thinking it was snow, and smeared it on our faces,” Kent said. “But unlike snow, it was hot. We just thought, ‘Well, it’s summer.’ We were only 13.”

Those flakes were radioactive fallout from the Manhattan Project’s Trinity test—the first atomic bomb detonation in history—conducted at 5:29 a.m. atop a 100-foot steel tower 40 miles away at the Alamogordo Bombing and Gunnery Range in Jornada del Muerto valley. Though the site was chosen for its supposed isolation, thousands lived within a 40-mile radius, some as close as 12 miles, and none were warned or evacuated before or after the test, even as fallout continued to fall for days.

Barbara Kent and all her friends eventually developed cancer. Every girl in that photo died before turning thirty. Kent was the only one to live longer, surviving several bouts of cancer herself. Often forgotten is the heavy toll paid not only by those targeted in the bombings in Japan but also by those living near where the bombs were first tested.

Dapo Michaels, a scientist fascinated by the project, was unaware of the long-term effects. When he realized the consequences, guilt overwhelmed him, leading to a mental breakdown. He was eventually institutionalized and passed away.

Similar tragedies unfolded at Maralinga in Australia, where many Aboriginal people died of cancer—losses that remain largely unknown
