The remains of the demolished Russian/Ukrainian nuclear power plant at the center of the 1,017 square mile “Exclusion Zone” sits, uninhabitable, where nobody has lived since the accident in May of 1986 ~llaw

On My Mind Today:

When it comes to the proliferation, or even the present accumulation, of both nuclear energy and nuclear weapons, we have no idea what we’re doing or even how to control every phase of producing and using both products as well as our insane reasoning for manufacturing either or both of them. Do we all have a subconscious “death wish”?

First, why are we considering more nuclear weapons around the world when we already know such a proliferation of nuclear arms will not save any of us from a nuclear armageddon — doing so will only increase the already daily threats from one or more of those nations that already have more than enough weapons of mass destruction that can kill us all thousands of times over, yet, for instance, Trump’s refusal to “protect” other NATO nations that had been taken for granted with previous U.S. presidents, is prompting many of them to build their own nuclear arsenals that, if built, will never be used.

Primarily that is because of this thing called “deterrence” which is the closest thing we have to a treaty or stand-off on blowing the world up. Deterrence is the only reason that any country begins or continues to add to their nuclear arsenals, but such a system of prevention is terribly expensive in this increasingly starving world, and as I have stressed many times before Deterrence can not go on forever — an d one day one country or another will shoot first and when that happens the “game” will be over forever. There is no need to speculate further, because it will all end in a matter of hours . . .

Second, why the sudden wish to build more nuclear power plants, which are extremely expensive, will only get moreso, and each and every one of them, new, old, or on the planning and design board, is openly dangerous to what I refer to as “stationery” nuclear weapons, which are subject to all kinds of wars, tyranny, nuclear fuel theft and black market trade, not to mention human or AI management mistakes that will threaten the lives of life all around the world. And the hell of it is, the more nuclear power facilities we build, the more opportunities and chances for nuclear plant radiation and other poisonous airborne drift will make it impossible for the few of us left to live anywhere on the planet except in isolated areas that are considered ‘unlivable’ — say, Antarctica for instance — today. And then we have the rapidly expanding sewers of uncontrolled nuclear waste that we have no idea what to do with, and like nuclear bomb proliferation, nuclear power plant proliferation will only add to the probability of extinguishing all life, including ours, on planet Earth.

Every new day of the presence of nuclear anything with our constantly increasing “loose cannons” running rampant around the world — see yesterday’s Post — how can we possibly avoid our own demise? The answer, of course, is that we can’t.

“End Nuclear Insanity Before Nuclear Insanity Ends Humanity” ~llaw

Lloyd A. Williams-Pendergraft

Jul 17, 2025

On My Mind Today:

Trump’s mindless interference into everything nuclear, from global nuclear war to irresponsible nuclear power deregulation, blindly creating unknown but infinite possibilities for all kinds of nuclear crises, beyond the already tremendous risk of an immanent catastrophe. Trump is a “loose cannon” — the perfect example ever. Trump and his pitiful crew of White-House sailors must be removed from office immediately if not sooner. Call it a “mutiny” if you like . . .

As I mentioned just above, Trump is the perfect definition of what is called a “loose cannon”, which comes from the days of cannons aboard wooden ships that had to be tied down to prevent them from damaging ships, all before, during, and after wars regardless of one’s own ships or the ships of their enemies, creating a potentially catastrophic multitude of dangerous situations for all ships of war regardless of their missions.

Wanna-be Captain of the good ship “Earth”, Trump is the epitome of the loose cannons of old and, and specifically of today’s meaning of the two-word-phrase. But in a nuclear age rather than the loose cannons and wooden ships’ times, this starship called Earth and her most short-sighted and indelibly dangerously mentally impaired unqualified captain, including the evil malicious Captain Bligh, the infamous Captain of “Mutiny on the Bounty”, Trump is far beyond being under control nor so much as to be able to navigate in any kind of comparison other than the “loose cannon” meaning of today . . . ~llaw

“End Nuclear Insanity Before Nuclear Insanity Ends Humanity” ~llaw

Lloyd A. Williams-Pendergraft

Jul 16, 2025

On My Mind Today: Why We Must Never Go Nuclear . . . (and rid ourselves of what we already have.)

One more time I have to go back to posting an article, which I hope all of you who have the opportunity will take heed and carefully read and study this gruesome — even “tragic” as the article points out — assault on education and science, which now includes all things nuclear power and weapons, which is the dirtiest and most dangerous product ever discovered by mankind.

So who on Earth is responsible for protecting humanity and other living animals from the possibility of an extinct planet? The answer is apparently nobody because we have thrown in with a degenerative declining world full of anti-education, anti-science, anti practicality, and have sold our souls to ignorance and a pathetic lack of pride in what humanity should be all about — a world dedicated to supporting life of all kinds, including ourselves. ~llaw

Billions of dollars in cuts to research are leaving lives at stake

One hundred years ago this month, the Scopes trial was held in Dayton, Tenn. For 11 days, jurors heard arguments about John Scopes, a high school teacher who had taught the theory of evolution in apparent violation of the Butler Act, a state law that made it illegal for public school teachers to introduce theories that contradicted the Biblical creation story. The trial, which featured celebrated attorneys Clarence Darrow defending Scopes and erstwhile presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan leading the prosecution, was widely publicized and sparked a national conversation about the tensions between science and religion — and government’s role between the two. Then, as now, the controversy was fed by a sense of paranoia and social anxiety over rapid cultural change. In the end, Scopes was convicted, which was later overturned on appeal. But the case took on legendary status, being dramatized in the play and film “Inherit the Wind,” and despite Scopes’ conviction, coming to be seen as a significant victory for science.

Since then, the right-wing in America has intermittently conducted an assault on science that, with the ascent of the religious right, gelled into an all-out war around the early 1980s. Many conservatives have, over the last 40 years, opposed AIDS research, stem cell research, basic facts about climate change — and legislation to address it — and measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

It seems the administration and its allies in Congress want to set the United States back a century — back to the time of the Scopes trial.

Under President Donald Trump, the GOP has decided to go nuclear. The federal government’s support of science and medicine is being systematically destroyed by devastating cuts to research, agencies and staff. It seems the administration and its allies in Congress want to set the United States back a century — back to the time of the Scopes trial.

Scientific advances have long met with resistance from many cultural conservatives. For numerous GOP voters, this suspicion is tied to religious fundamentalism and the very crux of the Scopes trial — that the theory of evolution contradicts the Bible and is, therefore, blasphemous. Denying that basic understanding of the natural world makes, in their minds, many scientific breakthroughs suspect.

But the war on science isn’t just about religion or common mistrust. This phenomenon is also related to the Republican Party’s fealty to businesses like the fossil fuel industry, which requires denial of climate change to reduce competition from renewable energy sources. This view has helped to perpetuate the right-wing conspiracy theory of weather manipulation — that the extreme weather events the country has been experiencing, such as the recent Texas flood, are caused by the deep state geoengineering the weather.

Public health expert: Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” will cause misery and death

There has long been a conservative faction that wished to slash taxes and hoped to end support for science in the public sector. These people believe that business should pick up the slack, and they have refused to acknowledge that much of the basic research that leads to breakthroughs in science and technology, some of which results in dead ends and disappointing outcomes, do not immediately make a profit and are therefore unlikely to be pursued.

Then there is the traditional right-wing suspicion toward government, which causes many to be hostile to any public health or environmental regulations. Most recently, we saw that ideology play out during the pandemic, when many on the right opposed temporary restrictions of everyday activities and even vaccines to stop the spread of COVID-19. The fall-out from that devastating event looks like it’s going to haunt the country for some time to come.

The disastrous cuts to science and medicine are happening at all levels of the federal government, and they are impacting every agency. Especially catastrophic, for the lives of millions both in the U.S. and around the world, is what’s happening with biomedical research.

The administration’s attacks on universities for spurious political reasons are affecting many research projects that would otherwise lead to treatments and cures for deadly diseases. Appointing the Four Horseman of the Scientific Apocalypse — Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as secretary of health and human Services, Dr. Mehmet Oz to run Medicare and Medicaid services, Dr. Marty Makary as head of the FDA and Dr. Jay Bhattacharya to run the National Institutes of Health — has signaled the end of any serious approach to biomedical science and public health by the federal government. The individual histories of these men as a dangerous conspiracy theorist, a quack cure TV huckster, an eccentric contrarian and an ethically-challenged partisan have sent shockwaves through the scientific community. Together and separately, they have taken a wrecking ball to our august scientific institutions that were previously considered to be the best in the world.

Even as Kennedy, Oz, Makary and Bhattacharya work to dismantle valuable scientific research and disease prevention measures, they are quick to admonish Americans to stay healthy. “Don’t eat carrot cake,” Oz recently admonished Medicaid recipients. “Eat real food.”

Kennedy also chimed in with a patriotic plea. “This administration wants to encourage Americans to take control of their health — to eat right, to have lifestyle changes that save us all. And that’s the patriotic thing to do, not only for our country but for every individual American. It’s a patriotic duty to keep ourselves healthy.”

This is the caliber of American scientific expertise we now have in charge. Sure, we should all eat better and exercise. And it’s great that the U.S. is finally getting rid of the food dyes that the European Union banned years ago. But much of what they are spouting is self-help, internet based, anecdotal nonsense.

Meanwhile, after warning us against the dangers of carrot cake, these luminaries are strangling research into mRNA vaccines, one of the potentially greatest advances in medical research in a century — all because of crank conspiracy theories about the mRNA COVID shots. The consequences are tragic. As the Guardian reported this week:

Research on mRNA cancer vaccines has been under way for more than a decade, with more than 120 clinical trials on treating and preventing cancers. mRNA shots have shown promise for preventing the return of head and neck cancer; lymphoma; breast cancer, which accounts for 11.6% of all cancer deaths in the US; colorectal cancer; lung cancer; and kidney cancer, among others.

Pancreatic cancer has a 10% survival rate and is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the US, but in a small study, about half of the patients who received an mRNA vaccine did not see their cancer return, and they still had strong immune responses three years later.

Early mRNA vaccine trials also indicated the recurrence of melanoma could be cut in half. And a small study co-authored by Sayour on glioblastoma showed the vaccines started affecting the tumors within 48 hours.

All of that is at risk now. The NIH is dismissing dozens of grant reviewers for mRNA research, leaving them understaffed and without the necessary expertise to assess the data. They have cancelled $766 million in contracts to develop mRNA vaccines against potential pandemic flu viruses. The consequences will be deadly.

It’s too much to expect these people to care about the lives that won’t be saved because of their antediluvian attitudes toward modern science. But they usually care about money. Economist Paul Krugman points out that “two first-rate economists, David Cutler and Ed Glaeser, have made a stab at estimating the impact of cuts at NIH. Their analysis suggests that these cuts might save $500 billion in federal spending over the next 25 years — while imposing more than $8 trillion in losses.”

A century after the Scopes trial, it seems we might not have learned that much at all. The right has rarely been interested in long-term thinking. But the country used to let scientists and researchers think about it for us and deliver the fruits of their labor for our common benefit, which included saving countless lives. This approach served us very well for over a century. Now it seems we’re just going to tell people it’s their patriotic duty to be healthy and leave it at that.

“End Nuclear Insanity Before Nuclear Insanity Ends Humanity” ~llaw

Lloyd A. Williams-Pendergraft

Jul 15, 2025

The Doomsday Clock, long ago inspired by the “Bulletin of Atomic Scientists”, being reset in 2025 . . .

On My Mind Today:

Time out on day two of the planned move to taking a hard look at nuclear energy rather than nuclear war because I see Trump being virtually torn asunder by the media and many other voices, some honest, some questionable over the “Epstein List” — that Trump said day before yester “didn’t exist” and yesterday claimed it was written by “Obama and Hillary” while all the while Trump fights back with such absurd and impossible lies.

His staff has been forced to lie as well, dodging from “yes” to “no” about the lists existence when anyone who follows this take-down with older, well known images and obviously true stories, along with lawsuits of young girls being forced away by threats, as well as the reason for Epstein’s suicide. There is no doubt in anyone’s mind who doesn’t know and probably hasn’t known for years is pretending — perhaps trying to protect Trump, who should resign as POTUS before the week is out — if he is smart, which he isn’t and take his entire cabinet and administration down with him.

And if that isn’t enough to force him and his staff out, there is this undeniable record of his life and his lack of qualifications to be a dog-catcher or even a citizen free to walk the streets in freedom. Does it really matter that sexual perversion and the atrocious rape of young girls, is the only offense necessary to bring him down? :

May be an image of 1 person and text

I copied the above meme from a trusted friend in Egypt whom I respect and agree with, most of which the world and the American public, if we looked at the facts of life in an unskewed manner would already know. Maybe we do, but maybe we’re in a state of massive denial?

Trump and his dishonest cabinet and other staff must be promptly removed from the Executive branch of our government before a major tragedy is unleashed on us all . . . ~llaw

“End Nuclear Insanity Before Nuclear Insanity Ends Humanity” ~llaw

Lloyd A. Williams-Pendergraft

Jul 14, 2025

On My Mind Today:

As I’ve pointed out over the years of this daily blog — particularly early on before the threats of nuclear war dramatically increased and Trump was reelected — we need much more realistic and practical views rather than the constant insidious drum of unreachable goals, or “pie-in-the-sky” impossible to achieve world=leader conferences about how we are going to defeat climate change and global warming and yet increase our global demand for more electricity.

The last several United Nations climate change conferences — COP 25 in 2019 thru COP 28 in 2023 have gone realistically nowhere in terms of these international United Nations’ climate change conferences from 2019 to 2023 and, up to now, have been billed as “saviors”, yet little, if any, progress has been made while all the while the atmospheric CO2 and other greenhouse gasses grow out of control each and every day. demonstrating that these “plans” have never come close to achieving their “optimistic” goals and ultimately constitute nothing more than embarrassing declarations, if not lies, in attempts to pacify those of us (including the conference attendees themselves) who live with the crisis every day of our lives. We eventually forget all about the “miraculous” future clean-air energy-related magic we have been promised.

Here are the promises from the December 2023 COP conference: The 2023 UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) concluded with several key promises and agreements, primarily focused on accelerating the transition away from fossil fuels and increasing climate finance. Specifically, nations agreed to work towards tripling renewable energy capacity and doubling energy efficiency improvements by 2030. Additionally, there was a push to phase down unabated coal power and phase out inefficient fossil fuel subsidies, with developed countries taking the lead. A crucial outcome was the operationalization of the Loss and Damage Fund, aimed at providing financial assistance to vulnerable nations facing climate change impacts.” (Google AI)

And, as mentioned above, even more optimistically (or impossible), more than 20 countries signed a declaration pledging to TRIPLE global nuclear energy capacity by 2050, meaning a 200% increase in nuclear energy generation compared to 2022 nuclear power.

Such a declaration demonstrates the ridiculous role of nuclear energy to help us achieve net-zero emissions targets and maintaining energy security. However, fyi net zero emissions is an extremely misleading formula because it does not really mean what it says — and that is a story for another day — The meaning is just another misleading and deceptive long-term lie made up by the nuclear industry . . .

There are a few ways and alternatives to recover from what is rapidly flowing toward the end of human and other life on planet Earth, and none of it will be easy, but the first step is to unite as a global world as collective antinuclear individuals and recognize that the best survival tools at our disposal right now are the plentiful renewable power generation resources — e.g. solar, wind, hydropower, geothermal, and biomass — which would be much easier to subsidize and generally finance if we immediately stop investing entirely in nuclear nightmare suicidal dreams . . .

I have used the COP conferences to describe the uselessness of such global or smaller State or other group conferences, and there are many others, but all of them are deceptively misleading and act more like thumb-sucking pacifiers for the public to comfortably believe that they will live to see another day. ~llaw

All nuclear power steps from exploration to mining to milling to refinement, and even to the end product and beyond unto its wastes are a menace to life on planet Earth! ~llaw

“End Nuclear Insanity Before Nuclear Insanity Ends Humanity” ~llaw

Lloyd A. Williams-Pendergraft

Jul 13, 2025

On My Mind Today:

I am just a thoughtful slightly upset, confused, somewhat inhibited, mind-wandering journalist today, trying my best to style the future format here in the best way possible without getting overly technical with ‘all the things nuclear’ I have over some 50 years stuffed in my mind following a career in the nuclear mining and power industry spread over all or parts of three decades, but the important core being the entire 1970s when the nuclear power gained its first ability to sell uranium to commercial reactors at their own negotiated prices, though still with some governmental control over the price of “yellowcake” (U308) on a per-pound basis.

I left the industry in the 2nd quarter of 1980 due to the appalling leadership’s attitude toward concerned protestors and other citizens following the 3 Mile Island partial meltdown of one of their reactors, in the spring of the previous year, which prompted one of our industry corporate presidents to present the nuclear industry in a speech with the new logo-like principle of “Let the Bastards Freeze to Death in the Dark.”, a message that should have turned other corporate executives against the industry simply on its own thoughtlessness and cruelty, but what it did do was to help turn the common world against new nuclear facility enterprises.

Until now, that is! Today we are looking directedly into the face of our fear of an “armageddon-like” WWIII filled with nuclear weapons of mass destruction. Yet we are endorsing, once again — this time on a promise of a huge born-again industry scale filled with new nuclear plants together with the endorsement of questionable industry propaganda, engineering and mining corporations, political endorsements, and other enterprises all preying on the ignorant and innocent public in several unreasonable and dangerous ways, including the myth of nuclear energy solving the threat of global warming and our much needed eventual environmental climate change. Such promises to the world population will never happen for several reasons including time.

So instead of providing clean, safe, and reliable electricity around the world, the insane return to nuclear power adds just one more deadly — meaning the worst of all — environmental poison burden on all oxygen-breathing life on planet Earth . . . ~llaw

This nuclear power facility, owned and operated by California’s PG&E (Pacific Gas and Electric Company), located in Diablo Canyon near San Luis Obispo at Avila Beach, California, is the last commercial nuclear power provider in California.

Lloyd A. Williams-Pendergraft

Jul 12, 2025

On My Mind Today:

Due to my recent format changes I have begun, once again, numbering the weekend posts as inclusive so that the numerical count is continuous. I had, some time ago, not included the count on weekends because I had altered the format, directed only at media news coverage, usually not including opinion or other additional information or dialogue. Therefore I will (legitimately arrive at the the one thousand and three year anniversary Posts a bit sooner than expected. I write this today just to prevent any confusion from readers as well as myself. llolloll!

For your preliminary information, and as I mentioned in yesterday’s blog, I will be changing the subject from nuclear war to nuclear power/energy, at least for awhile, although if there is unusual or extremely important or surprising news in either category, I will swatch for a day or two or more as necessary to keep you who care informed as our entire nuclear world becomes a bigger and a more complicated and spurious subject to cover — full of some truths, half-trues, unintentional mistakes, intentional mistakes, intentionally wrong propaganda, and just plain misinformation, misconceptions and outright lies from every conceivable direction.

And as a constant reminder I ask you, the reader, to always keep in mind what happened from the very small equivalent of a nuclear bomb to today’s nuclear weapons that ended WWII by devastating two cities full o innocent citizens in Japan, and also why nuclear energy devastated some cities and communities around the globe from nuclear accidents and mother nature’s wrath before we realized that we ought to shut down the advancement of nuclear energy and put the nuclear industry in cold storage for so many years. Why should we change our minds now?

Nuclear proliferation for war or for energy will only make ‘all things nuclear’ more threatening and lethal to us all, including other innocent life that also have an unwritten right to safely occupy planet Earth. ~llaw

Nuclear weapons of mass destruction and the return to nuclear powered energy are spiraling out of control. Let’s not let it happen again . . .

“End Nuclear Insanity Before Nuclear Insanity Ends Humanity” ~llaw

Lloyd A. Williams-Pendergraft

Jul 11, 2025

What’s On My Mind Today:

It constantly haunts me that so few of us understands — or even seriously care about or concern themselves with the overall life-threatening uses of all things nuclear — not just relative to threats of nuclear war, but also to the expanding idea and misguided rush to expand and use nuclear power to solve our ever-increasing need for electricity as well as to “solve” the greenhouse gas problem relevant to global warming and climate change. Nuclear energy will not resolve the climate change issue. But it for sure will present us with incredible and expansive future problems that are most likely far beyond our ability to control.

The very last decision to re-awaken the nuclear industry and use nuclear power to solve our energy problem is utter nonsense, but even if you disagree with that view, using nuclear power is undisputedly infinitely more immediately dangerous to humanity and other life than CO2 and other greenhouse gas elements. Nuclear waste, for instance, puts the current and future crisis of global warming to shame, but we seem not to care even though simple science and other critical considerations clearly tell us the differences. And, then, too, there are other serious problems with nuclear energy proliferation so numerous that they border on potential extinction of most all life on the planet, even if a nuclear WWIII war is not involved at all.

And now, today, there is an article that our incompetent U.S. President wants to forge ahead, advancing “at warp speed” because, according to this article from “The Hill”, Our energy future requires a nuclear warp speed (Click on the link to read the story.)

The following lead-line line from the article tells us all that needs to be said at the moment:

Trump’s strategy for energy dominance includes promoting nuclear energy, ending green energy subsidies, and increasing energy production.

I will read the article more carefully this evening or over the weekend along with you . . .

So, in that light, I have decided to begin, starting on Monday, writing a daily weekday article with an opposing rebuttal and sharp criticism of this approach toward alleviating the global energy problem that we have long faced, but have continued from the past to do nothing about, for the better part of a century other than make political and industry false promises to the public to give us hope for a livable future. “End Nuclear Insanity Before Nuclear Insanity Ends Humanity” ~llaw

Lloyd A. Williams-Pendergraft

Jul 10, 2025

On My Mind Today:

This is an unorganized draft of a complaint I am writing to Facebook in protest to them and their AI ‘bots who apparently have no concept about what human kindness or empathy is. Presently, Facebook is one of my minor reader outlets — at least for now — but which will no doubt eventually become the most important social and media source I will need — which has been my plan all along — if my attempted education to the world about the disastrous growth of “All Things Nuclear”, which will likely cause the end of most all life on planet Earth unless we rid ourselves of both nuclear weapons of mass destruction and nuclear power generating plants from all use anywhere and for anything on the globe.

Facebook has refused to allow me to “advertise” — even though I have set up a payment account with them — for my daily blog produced daily as “LLAW’s All Nuclear Daily Digest”, which I have posted for nearly 1,000 consecutive days to a small audience that should by now be in the thousands, including on Facebook and all other media and social news outlets and websites.

Why complain, you ask? Well, Facebook tells me that my blog fails to meet their so-called “Community Standards“ because my posts are not friendly nor kind to other Facebook users, which, since I am trying with what’s left of my aging heart to help save the world from committing lemming-like suicide, meaning the end of human civilization and other life as we know it, which seems to me to be the opposite of my “cruel”, or otherwise “unkind” or non-compliant with other standards such as “Social Issues”, “Elections”, or “Politics”. Such Posts absolutely do not apply to the message(s) in my blog, even if they sometimes contain names of politicians.

Facebook seems to fail to understand that my messages are the most “kind” messages to humanity that we, including myself, have ever known before — other, than perhaps, from those concerned others who deliver the same message around the world as a warning to us all . . .

(Note: I have copies of the rejection notices Facebook has sent to me, but for now l have elected not to post what they have to say on Facebook or on any other social website or service, including the media. I intend to file my protest with Facebook on Friday, or over the weekend, or on Monday, depending on my personal level of anger and disgust relative to their (not my 1st time disputing their issues, btw) insane declarations against me and my ongoing pleas to the world that Facebook seem s to have absolutely bassackwards.) ~llaw
