On My Mind Today:

We all know by now what fools Trump, who declared himself physically unfit for military life, and his comic-book warrior Hegseth made of themselves, dictating absolute ridiculous B.S. to the top U.S. generals stationed all around the world, taking them away from their dangerously real, and necessary, peace-keeping jobs.

No applause, no evident agreements, lots of annoyance, and nothing positive came from this showboat act by the most ridiculous and mindless U.S. president and his “military boy” in the entire history of the United States of America, imho.

There is no need to say more beyond these laugh-out-loud statements, so I will move on to the real world of life in the more serious “nuclear world” by taking an important look at the daily advancing scare of a possible nuclear reactor/plant meltdown regarding — for the 10th time — this self-same Russia/Ukraine situation rendering Europe’s larges nuclear power plant powerless from the loss of electricity (which oddly enough it was built to generate) and is running on emergency diesel fuel until the current loss of external power from normal power generation (the grid) until their power lines are restored. Russia says there is no problem; Ukraine and the rest of Europe are worried “half-to-death”, as they should be. ~llaw

Ukraine’s Zelenskyy says situation ‘critical’ at Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant

Ukrainian leader says the plant has been without power for seven days, the longest stretch since Russia’s 2022 full-scale invasion.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned that the situation at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is “critical” as the facility has been without power for seven days.

“It has been seven days now. There has never been anything like this before,” Zelenskyy said in his nightly address on Tuesday.

One of the diesel generators providing emergency power to the plant is no longer working, Zelenskyy said, a week after external power lines went down.

“Russian shelling has cut the plant off from the electricity network,” the Ukrainian leader said.

“This is a threat to everyone. No terrorist in the world has ever dared to do with a nuclear power plant what Russia is doing now.”

The outage is the longest the Russian-occupied plant has gone without power since Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

It is also the 10th time since the start of the war that the plant – the largest in Europe – has been disconnected from the power grid.

Russia seized control of Zaporizhzhia in the first weeks of the war, and the plant’s six reactors, which before the conflict produced about one-fifth of Ukraine’s electricity, were shut down after Moscow took over.

But the plant needs power to maintain cooling and safety systems, which prevent reactors from melting – a danger that could set off a nuclear incident.

Russian officials have not commented on the latest statements on conditions at the plant.

But Moscow and Kyiv have repeatedly accused each other of risking a potentially devastating nuclear disaster by attacking the site, and have traded blame over the latest blackout.

Rafael Grossi, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the United Nations’s nuclear watchdog, earlier this week decried the cutoff of the external power lines but assigned no blame to either side.

In a statement on Tuesday, Grossi said he was engaging with officials from both countries to restore offsite power to Zaporizhzhia as soon as possible.

“I’m in constant contact with the two sides with the aim to enable the plant’s swift re-connection to the electricity grid,” the IAEA chief said.

“While the plant is currently coping thanks to its emergency diesel generators – the last line of defence – and there is no immediate danger as long as they keep working, it is clearly not a sustainable situation in terms of nuclear safety,” he added.

“Neither side would benefit from a nuclear accident.”

IAEA monitors are stationed permanently at Zaporizhzhia and at Ukraine’s three other nuclear power stations.

“End Nuclear Insanity Before Nuclear Insanity Ends Humanity.” ~llaw

On My Mind Today:

Just a few days ago, I posted the most read daily LLAW’s NUCLEAR WORLD TODAY story — from my dear co-author and Canadian friend Amy Ramdass — that instantly became by far the most popular narrative ever in the 1st 1,060 Posts prior to today’s. So it is that I am reposting it once again today because even in its poetic style along with a bit of more modern concerns beyond the original authors’ presentation, they tell us just about all we need to know about who and what world leaders and rulers of today have become.

One recent definition from today is “Narcissistic Monsters”, which fits so many of the Posts from this blog over the last three years or so, which clearly points out that we are allowing the wrong kinds of people to control the masses in countries around the world, and each day it becomes more obvious that if we are to survive, along with much of all other life, we need to rid ourselves of such leadership as well as “All Things nuclear”. ~llaw

Today’s Featured Story:

On My Mind Today:

I have long wondered if any of us would exist today had we been armed the way we are these days in a war against the kind of future Hitler had in mind for humanity back in the 1940’s WWII.

I also wonder if we are fast-tracking today on the verge of repeating that history and if the final result will be a victory for the desired existential human cause. I do hope I am dead wrong, but I suspect this time around that the goals of power-crazed so-called “leaders” will be successful — not only because of the two original nuclear bombs that played a cruel but purposeful and final role then — but also the fact that there are nine power-crazed international or “leaders” or “rulers” whose nations have more than enough nuclear weapons of mass destruction to destroy all life on Mother Earth thousands of times over.

So it is that I — and millions of others who are alive, aware, alert, and awake — worry about the impending possibility of destroying ourselves along with the rest of life on planet Earth.

As food-for-thought I have borrowed a very important Facebook Post, rather than a current nuclear news story, from my dear Canadian friend and co-author of an 1880’s Old West Wyoming cowboy tale based on the insane reality of what overzealous self-important and self-aggrandized men can do without even a life-ending flinch to anyone who may feel — in their own wrong-headed, overzealous, demented minds — that their personal belongings, territory and its boundaries have been violated.

Hitler apparently felt that way, too, and so do some, if not all, of the “leaders” and their sycophants of today’s nine nations who can easily end life on planet Earth with little more than pressing a single button . . . ~llaw

Today’s Featured Story:

So here, for what it’s worth now and on into the future, with my deeply sincere thanks to my dear friend, Amy Indira Dio Ramdass, and previous co-author, is her thoughtful food-for-thought recent Facebook Post that we should carefully consider:

“Pastor Martin Niemöller (1892-1984) is on my mind.

He is remembered for “First They Came,” a poem… to show us how heavy (his remorse) weighed on his conscience…or to awaken humanity’s empathy.

Legend says that at first, he supported the Nazis, probably he also was antisemitic…until those muthafuckas came and took control of the churches ….and only then he dared to speak out but it was far too late.…”

The rest we know in his poem…

Would speaking earlier have spared him and countless others? Perhaps. A powerful voice with a congregation could have joined many smaller voices to oppose tyranny before it grew too strong.

Let this inspire me to not make any such similar mistakes…and this post is a start …. (for me to go boldly, bravely, badass-ly ever after)….of me adding my voice to the mix. And hoping against hope that we let go of our hate for each other NOW for civil war weakens our own system, distract us…..and there is definitely a lot of hate in my fb stream, enough to keep us all in Fear: fight, flight and freeze instincts…

Yikes. ~ Amy Indira Dio Ramdass

Children play amid the ruins of a school in Kharkiv, Ukraine.

On My Mind Today:

These kinds of Russian attacks in the “United Nations” story below are not conventional war by definition, but rather war crimes, ostensibly killing innocent civilians, including children, and potentially depriving cities, towns, and communities of electricity for heating homes and other facilities that are far and away outside the scope of the war definition. Such criminal attacks have been going on in Ukraine for more than four years, yet those Russian leaders who endorse and order such war crimes — e.g. President Vladimir Putin — who has been internationally charged with war crimes but has not been prosecuted.

It seems the global leadership role around the world is little more than a childish game of “tag” that I’m sure most all of us have played at one time or another in a school yard, a city park, or your own backyard. This inhumane irresponsibility of world “leaders” or “rulers” is a threat to every human-being on planet Earth and therefore other life as well. That threat is world-wide genocidal nuclear war.

In order for humanity to survive and protect ourselves from extinction we must unite as an international cooperative world of individuals dedicated to united self-governments everywhere, and to protect other life as well, we must, en-masse, denounce and force the purge of all leaders of militarily nuclear-armed countries and their nuclear weapons. ~llaw

In Ukraine, people across the country have been dealing with the aftermath of a massive Russian bombing raid that lasted into the early hours of Monday, reportedly killing four, including a teenage girl.

According to the Ukrainian authorities, the attack lasted around 12 hours and involved nearly 600 drones, 46 cruise missiles and five rockets.

“More lives have been lost…homes have been impacted [and] children are among the casualties,” said the UN aid coordination office, OCHA. Densely populated Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia were among the regions that came under attack that destroyed or damaged home and other public services.

The UN World Health Organization (WHOreported on Sunday that a cardiology facility had also been hit in Kyiv, killing two.

Nuclear plant risks

In a related development, the Russia-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station continued to use emergency generators to power its six shutdown reactors and other essential nuclear safety and security functions, after suffering its tenth complete loss of offsite power supply last week.

In warning at the weekend, the UN International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said that the plant had enough spare fuel to last at least 10 days and that it was in contact with both sides to restore outside power as soon as possible.

The nuclear watchdog also underlined the “constant dangers” to nuclear safety last week after a drone was downed and detonated approximately 800 metres from the perimeter of Ukraine’s South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant.

An IAEA team on site reported that 22 unmanned aerial vehicles had been observed late Wednesday and early Thursday, some coming as close as half a kilometre from the site.

The team said that a crater measuring four metres square at the surface and one metre deep had been left by one downed drone. There were no reported casualties.

“Once again drones are flying far too close to nuclear power plants, putting nuclear safety at risk,” said Director General Grossi. “Fortunately, last night’s incident did not result in any damage to the South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant itself. Next time we may not be so lucky. I continue to urge both sides to show maximum military restraint around all important nuclear facilities,”

Winter threat grows

As winter comes, attacks on Ukraine by Russia have continued to impact energy infrastructure, cutting power to thousands of people.

In the first half of 2025, the UN and partners provided some form of assistance to 2.4 million people throughout the country, with a focus on helping front-line communities. Total needs are more than twice that number.

In addition to significant access challenges in Russian-occupied territories, the humanitarian response remains stretched by the sharp increase in attacks in recent months which has caused new displacement and created additional needs.

The 2025-2026 Winter Response Plan which launched in July seeks $280 million and is about 40 per cent funded.

In line with the reprioritized relief plan for Ukraine – the result of reduced funding for humanitarian work globally – aid workers are focusing on four deliverables:

  • assist vulnerable front-line residents,
  • support evacuations,
  • deliver emergency post-strike assistance and
  • help internally displaced people.

OCHA stressed that relief assistance continues to be provided in areas outside the priority focus, particularly in western and central Ukraine.

On My Mind Today:

The entire world is full of grief and hatred, threatening not just war, but nuclear war at a time when we ought to clearly know and understand that humanity and most other life cannot continue to exist if an actual nuclear war should begin in earnest without reservations or thoughtful consideration.

With every day and every nuclear threat the likelihood of some power-crazed and ill-advised “leader” or “ruler” of a nuclear armed country — who believes he is some kind of savior to somehow satisfy his deranged ego — we are facing another step toward the end of perhaps all life on planet Earth.

And, yes, it is possible that there are nations, including the United States, whose single “leader” or “ruler” can push a single button and end it all. We all ought to know better . . . ~llaw

MOSCOW – The Kremlin on Sept 28 dismissed threats by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that Kremlin officials should know where the bomb shelters were, saying that Ukraine was losing the war and that its negotiating position was worsening.

Mr Zelensky suggested to news outlet Axios that the centres of Russian power, like the Kremlin, were potential targets, saying that Kremlin officials “have to know where the bomb shelters are”.

“Zelensky is trying to demonstrate to the Europeans, who now act as the breadwinners, that he is such a brave soldier,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told state television.

“Meanwhile, the state of affairs at the front indicates the opposite. With every passing day, the situation for Ukraine is inexorably deteriorating.

“And every day, Ukraine’s negotiating positions are inexorably deteriorating.”

Russia controls 114,918 sq km, or about 19 per cent of Ukraine, and has taken 4,729 sq km of Ukrainian territory in the past year, according to the pro-Ukrainian DeepState map project.

When asked directly by state television’s Kremlin correspondent Pavel Zarubin on how the Kremlin would perceive an attack on the centre of Russian power, Mr Peskov said that “it’s better not to even talk about it”.

On My Mind Today:

The constant contradictions and questionable characterizations of this off-again-on-again intentional or forced lack of safety and protection of the critical electrical feed to Ukraine’s long shut-down Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant tells us how the facts of Russia’s purposes and plans for the plant’s future are unclear— not unlike all nuclear-armed countries’ leaderships, including our own here in the U.S. — nothing more than intentional constant lies to the rest of us to keep themselves in power. Our own “president” even tried several months ago to get involved by proposing that the U.S. take over the plant’s occupation but that idea was quickly disposed of, thankfully.

This is the 10th time the largest power power plant in Europe has been — no doubt for questionable and indefinite reasons — shut down by attacks in various ways by the Russian military and the Russian operators who control the plant itself. Are these attacks scare tactics? Or are they a strategic part of the ongoing Russia/Ukraine war? Today’s nuclear power plants are also tantamount to stationary nuclear weapons of mass destruction — especially in times of war.

Whatever these attacks are, they are dangerous to all of the European continent. Ukraine has made it clear that the attacks may be a forerunner to restarting the nuclear power plant, which would be a grave and dangerous decision by Russia for all kinds of reasons because the reactors at the plant are unsafe both for cooling controls and functionality having been shut down for years and the Russian dynamiting of the dam that supplied the necessary water for cooling.

The message here is that the general population of the world — including especially or at least the United States and Russia — should find a way to remove their leaders, administrators, and sycophants from all governmental responsibilities, reasons, and purposes. But of course that will never happen, but . . .

It seems to me that if we don’t promptly take this action that we will all be following those lead “lemmings” over similar various and sundry cliffs to our our own “armageddon” — or maybe it will be just one all at once. ~llaw

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine’s Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant entered its fifth day running on emergency generators Saturday, prompting mounting safety concerns.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, meanwhile, announced a $90 billion arms agreement with the United States and criticized Hungary for carrying out “dangerous” intelligence-gathering drone activities over Ukraine.

External power to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Europe’s largest, has been cut for more than four days in a record outage at the six-reactor facility on the front line of the war, Greenpeace Ukraine warned Saturday.

Emergency diesel generators are being used to power cooling and safety systems after the final power line was severed on Tuesday, according to the U.N. nuclear watchdog. Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, met with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday, but the external power supply was not restored.

The reactor core and used nuclear fuel must be cooled to prevent them overheating and triggering dangerous meltdowns like the ones that occurred in 2011, when an earthquake and tsunami hit the Fukushima plant in Japan. The U.N. atomic watchdog has repeatedly warned of the possibility of a radiation catastrophe like the one at Chernobyl, about 480 kilometers (300 miles) to the northwest, where a reactor exploded in 1986.

Ukrainian officials confirmed the severity of the situation. Minister of Energy Svitlana Hrynchuk told The Associated Press that “the plant remains in blackout mode, which is a significant violation of the conditions for its normal operation,” marking the 10th such incident since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. The cause, she said, was another shelling by the Russians, which damaged the only power transmission line supplying the plant from the Ukrainian energy system.

The Russian-controlled Telegram channel for the plant said Saturday that “sufficient diesel fuel reserves are available on-site to ensure long-term autonomous operation of the generators.”

A radiation and nuclear energy specialist at Greenpeace Ukraine, Jan Vande Putte, said “emergency diesel generators are considered the last line of defense, used only in extreme circumstances.”

“These are undoubtedly the most serious and important events since the beginning of the occupation of the ZNPP by Russia in March 2022,” he said.

Images suggest Russia may be trying to restart one reactor

Putte said that it was Russia’s “deliberate actions” that led to the plant’s disconnection from the external power grid of Ukraine. He warned that the development advanced Russia’s state-owned nuclear energy company Rosatom’s “long-standing goal” to “connect to the illegally occupied power grid in Zaporizhia and Donetsk regions and restart the nuclear reactor.”

New satellite analysis by Greenpeace Ukraine suggests that Russia may be positioning to restart at least one reactor despite high-risk wartime conditions. The environmental group said Russian engineers are building 125 miles (201 kilometers) of power lines connecting substations in the occupied cities of Melitopol and Mariupol, with construction beginning in December 2024.

According to Greenpeace’s analysis, Russia has also completed construction of a new water supply system for the plant’s cooling pond and deliberately damaged a 750-kilovolt power line that had connected the facility to Ukraine’s electrical grid.

The Associated Press could not independently verify Greenpeace Ukraine’s analysis.

The plant has been held by Russia since Moscow’s invasion in 2022. Its six reactors remain fueled with uranium though they are in a so-called cold shutdown — meaning nuclear reactions have stopped. However, the plant relies on external electricity to keep its reactor cool and power other safety systems. That external power has been cut multiple times in the war, forcing the plant to rely on diesel generators on site.

The city of Zaporizhzhia, about 440 kilometers (275 miles) southeast of Kyiv, is held by Ukraine and attacks have occurred around the plant as the front line is close. The IAEA rotates staff through the facility to check the plant’s safety and offer its expertise.

Zelenskyy addresses arms deal and regional tensions

Zelenskyy detailed Saturday at a press briefing in Kyiv what he called a “mega deal” for weapons purchases from the United States, with technical meetings beginning in late September. The $90 billion package includes both the major arms agreement and a separate “drone deal” for Ukrainian-made drones that the U.S. will purchase directly.

“We discussed and agreed on the main points with the President (Trump). Now we are moving on to practical implementation,” Zelenskyy said, adding that Ukraine had provided detailed specifications of its military needs to the U.S., including requests for long-range weapons systems.

Zelenskyy also criticized Hungarian drone activity over Ukraine, saying Ukrainian intelligence tracked of at least one drone. “I believe they are doing very dangerous things — very dangerous things, first and foremost for themselves,” Zelenskyy said.

He said that intelligence services had documented the drone’s movement with photos and electronic tracking, though he did not elaborate on what “Hungarian intelligence is studying on the territory of Ukraine.”

Posting on Facebook on Friday, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said the Ukrainian president “lost his mind” and was “seeing things.”

Hungary, led by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, has maintained close ties with Russia and has been critical of military aid to Ukraine.

Zelenskyy also disclosed that an Israeli Patriot air defense system has been operating in Ukraine for the past month, with two additional Patriot systems expected to arrive in the fall.

“The Israeli (Patriot) system is operating in Ukraine. Already a month, it’s been working for one month,” he said, declining to provide further details about the air defense deployments. Israel’s Defense Ministry refused to comment.

“End Nuclear Insanity Before Nuclear Insanity Ends Humanity.” ~llaw

See image description and photo credits on “NewsBreak” story posted below

On My Mind Today:

Having been born, grown, educated, worked and raised a family in Wyoming and living a good part of my life near Yellowstone National Park, it became a geographical favorite of my family and me, mostly including my father who was a life-long game warden and western artist. But we, back in those days had no clue about the potential dangers of the Yellowstone Caldera other than that it was, in my mistaken mind at least, an “extinct” volcano. Of course today I stand corrected.

But as I learned of the Yellowstone geology as time went by I realized it was similar to something akin to the nuclear world in terms of potential devastation and even extinction of most life in the United States and possibly around the world.

That knowledge and my “love” for Yellowstone is the reason I included it as a category in this daily blog and that one day it might become a world-wide source of energy for humanity, but also perhaps a dangerous generally unknown world-wide threat of mass destruction that, like nuclear weapons, could potentially destroy all life on planet Earth.

This article was so well done and inclusive of what the Yellowstone volcano is all about that once I had read it, I had to post it here. ~llaw

Eruption History: A Tale of Three Explosive Events (image credits: wikimedia)

The Supervolcano That Could Kill the Entire Humanity

By Henrieke Otte M.Sc.,

Location: A Hidden Giant Beneath Yellowstone

Nestled beneath the serene beauty of Yellowstone National Park lies a hidden giant: the Yellowstone Supervolcano. This colossal volcanic system spans parts of Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho in the United States. Beneath the lush forests and bubbling geysers, a massive chamber of molten magma sits, waiting quietly. This location makes it a unique geological hotspot, drawing visitors from around the globe who are unaware of the sleeping giant beneath their feet. The park itself is a stunning natural wonder, but the supervolcano adds an element of mystery and potential danger that fascinates scientists and tourists alike. Understanding its location is vital to grasping the enormous scale of this potential threat.

Size: Vastness of the Yellowstone Caldera

The Yellowstone Caldera is one of the largest volcanic systems in the world, measuring approximately 30 miles (48 kilometers) in width. This vast expanse is not just a simple crater but a complex system that extends deep into the Earth’s crust. The caldera’s size is a testament to the immense power and historical eruptions that have shaped the landscape over millions of years. To put it into perspective, if you were to stand at one end of the caldera, the other end would be beyond the horizon. Its sheer size is a reminder of the potential scale of future eruptions, dwarfing typical volcanic events in both magnitude and impact.

Eruption History: A Tale of Three Explosive Events

Yellowstone’s eruption history is both fascinating and terrifying. Over the past 2.1 million years, it has experienced three massive eruptions. The first occurred around 2.1 million years ago, followed by another 1.3 million years ago, with the most recent happening approximately 630,000 years ago. Each of these eruptions was significantly larger than typical volcanic events, leaving a lasting mark on the region’s geography. The ash and lava from these eruptions reshaped the landscape, creating the Yellowstone we know today. The intervals between these eruptions are long, but the enormity of each event serves as a stark reminder of what this supervolcano is capable of.

Magnitude of Supereruptions: A Force of Nature

A supereruption at Yellowstone would be an event of unimaginable magnitude. Such an eruption could release thousands of cubic kilometers of volcanic material, including ash, gas, and lava. The last eruption was so powerful that it dramatically altered the surrounding landscape, and a future eruption could do the same on an even grander scale. The energy released in a supereruption is so vast that it dwarfs the power of all human-made explosives combined. This potential force of nature is a reminder of the Earth’s unpredictable and immense power, capable of reshaping continents and climates.

Ash Fallout: A Blanket of Destruction

If Yellowstone were to erupt again on a similar scale, the ash fallout could blanket large parts of North America. This would not just be a local disaster; the ash could disrupt agriculture and infrastructure across the continent. Crops would be smothered, roads would become impassable, and air travel could be grounded. The economic and social consequences of such an event could lead to famine and economic collapse in affected areas. The ash would serve as a deadly reminder of the supervolcano’s power, transforming fertile lands into barren wastelands and turning bustling cities into ghost towns.

Global Cooling: A Volcanic Winter

The aftermath of a supereruption could lead to a phenomenon known as a volcanic winter. Vast amounts of sulfur dioxide and other aerosols released into the atmosphere would block sunlight, leading to a dramatic drop in global temperatures. This cooling effect could last for months or even years, disrupting natural climate patterns. The impact on global temperatures would be profound, affecting ecosystems, agriculture, and human life worldwide. A volcanic winter could become a grim reality, altering the planet’s climate in ways that are difficult to predict but impossible to ignore.

Climate Disruption: A Worldwide Ripple Effect

The global cooling effect from a Yellowstone eruption could drastically shorten growing seasons, causing crop failures and leading to mass starvation. Ecosystems would be disrupted as plants and animals struggle to adapt to the sudden change in climate. The ripple effect would be felt worldwide, affecting food production, global trade, and human survival. The interconnected nature of our world means that a catastrophe in one region could have far-reaching consequences, reminding us of the delicate balance we rely on for our survival. The potential for climate disruption is a sobering thought, highlighting the vulnerability of both nature and humanity.

Human Impact: A Threat to Global Survival

While the immediate impact of an eruption would devastate the region surrounding Yellowstone, the threat to human survival would extend globally. Food production would be disrupted, global trade could grind to a halt, and climate patterns would be altered. The combination of these factors could pose a significant threat to human survival, challenging our ability to adapt and overcome. The potential for a supereruption forces us to consider the fragility of our modern civilization and the ways in which we might mitigate such a disaster. It serves as a reminder of the need for preparedness and resilience in the face of nature’s unpredictable fury.

Current Activity: Watching and Waiting

Although the Yellowstone supervolcano is still active, there is currently no indication of an imminent eruption. Scientists continuously monitor the area for signs of increased volcanic activity, such as changes in geothermal features, seismic activity, and ground deformation. This ongoing vigilance helps ensure that any potential eruption would not catch us entirely off guard. The technology and expertise involved in monitoring the supervolcano are sophisticated, reflecting our understanding and respect for the forces at play. While the risk remains low, the watchful eyes of scientists around the world keep us informed and prepared.

Frequency: Rare but Not Impossible

Supereruptions at Yellowstone are extremely rare events. The last supereruption occurred around 630,000 years ago, and scientists estimate the chance of another such event in the next 1,000 years is less than 1 in 700,000. While these odds may seem reassuring, they remind us of the unpredictable nature of the Earth’s geological processes. The rarity of these events underscores the importance of understanding and preparing for the potential consequences. While the likelihood of a supereruption remains low, the potential impact is significant enough to warrant continued study and vigilance.

“End Nuclear Insanity Before Nuclear Insanity Ends Humanity” ~llaw

Lloyd A. Williams-Pendergraft

Sep 24, 2025

Russia’s former president and current deputy chairman of the country’s Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev (L)

On My Mind Today:

Remember when Trump deceitfully said he could end the Russia/Ukraine war in 24 hours as a part of his latest election campaign? He not only couldn’t, he has now created a monolithic crevasse between the U.S./Russia/ and Ukraine that is possibly threatening a nuclear war — perhaps as soon as a year from now — or even sooner if Putin or Trump should break the START Treaty agreement —the useless pact that “sort of prevents” Russia or the United States from starting a nuclear war, although they both countries have access to their own inventory of 1,550 deployed nuclear warheads and 700 deployed missiles and bombers — as well as the possibility of nuclear power plants used as weapons—or way more than enough to begin and end human and other life on planet Earth.

I would not trust either so-called “president” to honor the pact, although it expires in a year anyway. Neither of them are “honorable”, not unlike most al the other “leaders” or “rulers” around the world who have nuclear weapons of mass destruction at their disposal.

Trump seems to have no idea what he is doing regarding either Russia or Ukraine nor even how the USA is involved, and he has severely weakened our country’s standing around the world by switching his loyalty back and forth between Putin and Zelenskyy.

And so it is that we all need to pay attention to our ultimate destiny until we are somehow someday assured that nuclear bombs and nuclear energy will not exterminate almost virtually all life on our dear Mother Earth. ~llaw

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev warned the Trump administration that “the risk of direct conflict remains high” between the United States and Russia.

“Russia’s ready to comply with the START Treaty, which I signed in 2010. Now the Trump admin must decide. But adhering to the letter of the treaty isn’t enough. The US must give up on weakening Russia with sanctions and tariffs. Otherwise, the risk of direct conflict remains high,” Medvedev, who currently serves as the deputy chairman of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s Security Council.

Why It Matters

The Russia-Ukraine war, which has been ongoing since Russian President Vladimir Putin launched the invasion in February 2022, has fueled concerns about the potential of nuclear war. Russia has the largest nuclear stockpile in the world, and Russian media personalities have frequently made threats about the potential use of nuclear weapons amid the conflict. The U.S. has been supportive of Ukraine and has issued sanctions against the Russian economy in an effort to apply pressure to end the conflict.

What To Know

The START treaty, an agreement between the U.S. and Russia establishing limits on nuclear weapons, dates back to 1991. The updated New START treaty went into effect in 2011 and has been extended through February 4, 2026, according to the U.S. State Department.

The treaty places verifiable limits on all Russian deployed intercontinental-range nuclear weapons. It limits each country to no more than 1,550 deployed nuclear warheads and 700 deployed missiles and bombers.

Putin said on Monday that Russia would adhere to the treaty for one more year.

“To avoid provoking a further strategic arms race and to ensure an acceptable level of predictability and restraint, we believe it is justified to try to maintain the status quo established by the New START Treaty during the current, rather turbulent period,” Putin said.

He added that this would “only be viable if the United States acts in a similar manner and does not take steps that undermine or disrupt the existing balance of deterrence potentials,” NBC News reported.

The New START treaty was signed by former U.S. President Barack Obama and Medvedev. At the time, Obama said the agreement signaled the U.S. and Russia’s willingness to “pursue responsible global leadership.”

Russia suspended the New START Treaty in February 2023 after the U.S. accused Moscow of violating it due to its failure to uphold mutual monitoring elements related to inspections.

Tensions remained high between Russia and the U.S., as well as its European allies. On Tuesday, President Donald Trump said he believes NATO member states should shoot down Russian aircraft that violate their airspace after both Poland and Estonia reported Russian incursions earlier in September.

What People Are Saying

NATO, in a statement Tuesday: “Russia should be in no doubt: NATO and Allies will employ, in accordance with international law, all necessary military and non-military tools to defend ourselves and deter all threats from all directions. We will continue to respond in the manner, timing, and domain of our choosing. Our commitment to Article 5 is ironclad.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Monday, per NBC News: “Based on our analysis of the situation, we will subsequently make a decision on maintaining these voluntary self-restraints.”

What Happens Next

Efforts to bring an end to the Russia-Ukraine war have stalled. Nuclear tensions remain heightened as the conflict continues.

The briefcase cheget, which controls Russian nuclear weapons

On My Mind Today:

The risk of a nuclear war created by mistake and begun accidentally by human and/or technical computerized erroneous nuclear related procedural alerts by defense systems and power plants has long been a potential reality — and in fact has been narrowly averted at least once — and as we proceed into AI technologies and their automated surveillance and operations systems chances are that nuclear accidents — of both nuclear weapons and nuclear power — become mathematically more of a progressive possibility.

So it is that our own and other life’s apocalyptic demise on planet Earth could begin and end by nothing more than a huge fatal mistake. “The Telegraph” article below — sans images which were automatically removed by their posting system — deals with a serious possibility of a nation’s “leader” pulling a trigger or pushing a nuclear button by mistake . . . ~llaw

Putin has his finger on the nuclear trigger. The risk of an accident is enormous

Neither Russia nor the West wants atomic war. But history shows how easily a misunderstanding could lead to disaster

343

23 September 2025 12:41am BST

On Friday, three Russian MiG-31 Foxhounds, the Kremlin’s primary combat platform for hypersonic Kinzhal missiles (capable of carrying nuclear warheads), violated Estonia’s airspace. It was Russia’s latest incursion into a Nato member, following a series of breaches by drones over Poland and Romania earlier in the month.

This is obviously a dangerous escalation by the Kremlin. Vladimir Putin is likely seeking to build up a clearer picture of how Nato responds to provocations as well as to desensitise Europeans to breaches of their sovereignty. But there is another important element to the story, too. On Tuesday last week, to mark the culmination of a strategic command staff wargame codenamed “Zapad 2025”, Russia simulated the launch of a tactical nuclear strike. It was overseen by Russian President Vladimir Putin wearing a military uniform.

Neither Russia nor Nato wants a direct “kinetic” conflict. But as the war in Ukraine, a proxy confrontation between Moscow and Washington, rages on, the risk of unintentional escalation due to a misunderstanding is rising rapidly.

For five days, Russian forces conducted Zapad jointly with their Belarussian counterparts across 41 training bases in Western Russia and Belarus. The aim was to learn lessons from the current conflict in Ukraine, focused on hybrid strikes, mobile artillery tactics, and counter-drone warfare. Russia held previous Zapad drills in the autumn of 2021, using them as cover to amass approximately 190,000 troops along its Western border prior to the invasion of Ukraine, with the goal of achieving tactical surprise against Kyiv and Nato. Zapad-2021 also involved forces from Belarus, which is now in possession of Russian tactical nuclear weapons.

The Russians regularly practice the authorisation of nuclear weapon strikes as part of military drills, with Putin “pressing the button”, because they believe their leader must be psychologically prepared for this action. This is the result of an important lesson learned during the Soviet era. In 1972, then general secretary Leonid Brezhnev is said to have “trembled” when he was asked to push a button during a command post exercise simulating a war with the US. He kept asking his Defence Minister Andrei Grechko whether it was “definitely an exercise”.

While Western analysts dismissed Putin’s action as an exaggeration, claiming that there has been no real change to Russia’s baseline nuclear posture, US intelligence assessments based on so-called I&Ws (indications and warnings) may only be partially useful in understanding the current threat. The US threat detection framework is structured to detect an imminent threat, rather than provide strategic warning of a pacing threat that develops over time.

Crucially, there is now zero trust between Nato and Russia. Moscow’s long-standing fear that the US is seeking regime change in Russia has been exacerbated by frequent commentary from Western officials stating openly or implying their intention to defeat the Russian military, tank its economy, and remove Putin from power. Ukrainian strikes on the Russian nuclear triad, specifically the strategic bombers that form the centre-piece of Russia’s deterrence and defence strategy, are likely to have further exacerbated those fears.

In November, 1983, Nato was getting ready to practice a nuclear launch in a military exercise, Able Archer 83. Tensions were already high after the Soviets had shot down a South Korean passenger airliner that had strayed off course en route from Anchorage to Seoul. But the Kremlin went into convulsions over Able Archer, assuming that it was the real thing rather than a practice drill.

Russia’s intelligence agencies had been on high alert for two years, having been tasked in 1981 by KGB chairman Yuri Andropov and Brezhnev to look for indications of US intentions to launch a nuclear strike on the USSR. The KGB had issued a computer-generated intelligence estimate, indicating that the “correlation of world forces” dramatically favoured the United States. The result was a massive clandestine intelligence collection programme, codenamed RYAN (Raketno-Yadernoe Napadeniye; “nuclear missile attack” in Russian) to find signposts of US preparations for war with the USSR. It encouraged Soviet leaders to see in the US posture exactly what they had been looking for. A full-scale simulated release of nuclear weapons by Nato forces could only mean one thing to the paranoid Soviets: the beginning of nuclear war.

A mass Soviet nuclear attack awaited only an order from Andropov. There was no communication between Moscow and Washington throughout the crisis to clear up the situation. Fortunately, no order was given, and at the conclusion of the Nato exercise on November 11, 1983, the tension dissipated.

But it could have ended very differently. And the world faces a similar situation today, given the collapse of trust between Russia and the West, as well as the breakdown of key lines of communications.

Neither Nato nor Russia wants to end up in a kinetic dog-fight, let alone a nuclear war. But neither wants to allow the other side to be perceived as winning in Ukraine. Both, expecting an attack from the other, are using their massive intelligence collection systems to look for any signposts of an impending attack to enable quick decision-making.

Interpreting leadership intentions is inherently hard. Not every order can be intercepted and not every intelligence indicator is observable. Confusion and errors, as a result of the proverbial “fog of war”, are standard attributes of armed conflict. The likelihood that, in this pressure cooker environment, a miscalculation will be made with tragic results is very real.

As social media is exploding with President Trump’s ultimatums and the threats issued by Putin’s proxies, if cooler heads do not prevail in Moscow, Washington, and Europe, nuclear war could become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

End Nuclear Insanity Before Nuclear Insanity Ends Humanity” ~llaw Lloyd A. Williams-Pendergraft

Lloyd A. Williams-Pendergraft

Sep 22, 2025

The flowering of a spreading evil comes from the roots of a poisonous seed . . . ~llaw

So here, for what it’s worth now and on into the future, with my deeply sincere thanks to my dear friend and previous co-author is her thoughtful food-for-thought recent Facebook Post that we should carefully consider:

End Nuclear Insanity Before Nuclear Insanity Ends Humanity” ~llaw

On My Mind Today:

Trump says US wants Afghanistan’s Bagram Air Base back from Taliban . . .

It’s not so much what Trump says but more the selfishly demanding way he says it . . . He seems to be inviting conflict everywhere he touches base around the world. This nuclear world is a world that must globally, collectively, cooperate in unity instead of threatening other nations or belittling them as inferior.

It is well known, perhaps because he may suffer from a form of memory loss, that Trump ridicules others (e.g. Joe Biden and Barack Obama)) for things he has done himself, as in this case.

According to the “Al Jazeera” article below, Trump, who has frequently harshly criticized his predecessor, blames former President Biden for the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan — which Trump himself had initiated during his first term — said the US gave the Taliban “Bagram for nothing”.

America cannot become a country of greedy isolationism nor can it rule over a nuclear armed world. I fear that Trump’s harsh actions are provoking — rather than stemming — such a thing as nuclear war, which would no doubt initiate WWIII and end the problem of racial, ethnic, political, philosophical, and other man-made divisions forever . . . llaw

The Taliban has rejected United States President Donald Trump’s demand that it hand over the Bagram airbase that Washington ran during its 20-year war in Afghanistan, dismissing Trump’s threat that “bad things” will happen if this does not come to pass.

The Taliban said on Sunday that “Afghanistan’s independence and territorial integrity are of the utmost importance” and called on the US to uphold prior agreements that it would not resort to force.

“Accordingly, it is once again underscored that, rather than repeating past failed approaches, a policy of realism and rationality should be adopted,” Afghanistan’s rulers said.

Bagram, which was the US’s largest military site in Afghanistan, is a large airbase located 50km (31 miles) north of Kabul that served as one of the US’s key military hubs during its two-decade war against the Taliban. The war, which followed the September 11, 2001, attacks in New York and Washington by al-Qaeda, ended in 2021 with Washington’s abrupt and chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Thousands of people were imprisoned at the site for years without charge or trial by US forces during its so-called “war on terror”, and many of them were abused or tortured.

The Taliban retook the facility in 2021 following the US withdrawal and the collapse of the Afghan government.

Over the last week, Trump has expressed a keen interest in reacquiring the airbase.

“We’re talking now to Afghanistan and we want it back and we want it back soon, right away. And if they don’t do it, if they don’t do it, you’re going to find out what I’m gonna do,” Trump said to reporters at the White House on Saturday.

Trump first announced that he was working to take the base back during a state visit to the United Kingdom in a press conference alongside the UK’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Trump delivered a message that caught the attention of policymakers in Beijing, saying, “We’re trying to get it back because they need things from us. We want that base back. But one of the reasons we want the base is, as you know, it’s an hour away from where China makes its nuclear weapons.”

The nuclear weapons Trump referred to are likely at China’s testing range at Lop Nur in the western Xinjiang province.

“The airfield has an 11,800-foot [3,597m] runway capable of serving bomber and large cargo aircraft,” the US Air Force says of Bagram on its website.

Trump, who has harshly criticised his predecessor, former US President Joe Biden, for the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan — which Trump himself had initiated during his first term — said the US gave the Taliban “Bagram for nothing”.

Afghan officials have expressed staunch opposition to a renewed US presence in the country. Zakir Jalaly, a Foreign Ministry official, said “Afghans have never accepted foreign military presence in their land throughout history”, but added that the two countries need to engage in “economic and political relations based on bilateral respect and common interests”.

Fasihuddin Fitrat, a senior Ministry of Defence official, said a “deal over even an inch of Afghanistan’s soil is not possible. We don’t need it.”

Bagram was built during the Cold War by the Soviet Union, which initially started construction when the Afghan government at the time turned to Moscow for support in the early 1950s. The airbase served Soviet operations in the country for decades until they withdrew in the late 1980s.

The US revamped the facility following its own occupation of Afghanistan decades later, turning the base into a sprawling mini village with retail facilities that served US soldiers there.
