PG&E’s Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant at Avila Beach on the California Coast
LLAW’s THOUGHTS TONIGHT:
What is it about PG&E (Pacific Gas & Electric Company) that makes them by far the most dangerous utility power company on the planet? — yes this is the same outfit that has caused so much damage in California, and other border states for what seems like forever — burning down cities, poisoning the inhabitants of a city, blowing up cities — the list of critical death-filled mistakes, fabrications, and careless operations has bankrupted them multiple times over the years, yet here they are being approved to extend the operating life of the only commercial nuclear power plant still operating in California, outrageously being permitted to continue for five more years after its scheduled shutdown and mothballing in 2025 and, as a bonus, given billions of operating dollars to do so by both the U.S. government and the State of California.

Now, just this morning, the city of San Francisco and surrounds woke up to a no-power morning from PG&E. My own phone was entirely filled with articles, columns, emergency warnings, outraged businesses and private citizens alike . . . (and I live a few hundred miles east in Nevada near the California border, llolloll!) I took screenshot after screenshot of the public outrage, not bothering to read any details because who wants to wake up to a world full of anger the very first thing in the morning. But, I thought, “here we go again . . .”
I have written several opinion pieces here on “All Things Nuclear”, including an expansive report on all the the disasters, tears, human and property damage, and outrage PG&E has done over the years, wondering all the while why the company is still allowed to operate — especially with an extremely controversial West Coast nuclear power plant that the entire United States of America, Canada, and including California itself is downwind from. The nuclear power plant, located at Avila Beach in southern California, which has been known to have radiation-leaking cracks in the reactor walls and is well past its ability to remain safe (if it ever was), and to be allowed to continue operating for 5 extended years because California needs all the power it can get is beyond irresponsible. And, as I said, both California and the United States governments have endorsed the extension and given the company with the worst reputation in the history of public utilities ever a huge cash bonus to spread their potential treachery for 5 more years.
Thousands upon thousands of people in San Francisco surrounding cities, businesses, were without power for most of the day and some still are. PG&E said the power failure was because of an incoming storm, but the storm had not even arrived when multiple cities lost power in the greater Bay Area, I will leave it up to PG&E and you to answer the questions, but PG&# routinely lies about what went wrong — although they have routinely been caught in the act and have paid the consequences of damage and death over an over and over again.
I normally wouldn’t make such a big to-do about a huge (reason unknown) outage like this one, but PG&E has been on my nuclear watch for several years now, and I have no intention of ignoring any of their spine-tingling, corrupt, dangerous, and erratic ways of doing business. Their nuclear power plant at Diablo Canyon should be shut down as scheduled, because if it isn’t there will, no doubt, be “Hell” to pay . . . ~llaw
