Me, in S. Korea near the North/South Korea/U.S. Army De-Militarized Zone (DMZ) between the two nations at the 4th Cavalry Division Headquarters of the EUSA (Eighth U.S. Army) where I mainly spent my time rotating soldiers back to the USA for other assignments and bases, trying to get them reassigned as close as possible to home or wherever they wanted to go . . . along with other varied administrative assignments. LLAW’s All Things Nuclear Thoughts for Today . . .
Providing Nuclear weapons for South Korea is not a good idea, nor is it necessary. The U.S. is already aware that North Korea is a threat to, not only South Korea, but the USA itself as well, and an attack on South Korea would already be the same as a major attack on the USA. (Unless Trump changes the rules, which may be what South Korea, as he has with Ukraine, is worried about!)
The deployment of missile-delivered nuclear warheads from the USA in the event of a nuclear attack on South Korea would take only a few minutes to reach North Korea, so technically speaking, there is no reason for South Korea to have nuclear weapons at all, and, in fact, simply possessing them could cause a nuclear war between them that otherwise would more than likely never happen because the threat of nuclear possession would be of far greater worry to North Korea than it is already — including the existing fortification of American military bases, troops, and non-nuclear weapons — that North Korea is already tolerating. Adding nuclear weapons to the South Korean arsenal would instantly change, seriously raising the alarm level of their northern neighbors.
In other words, North Korea knows that a nuclear attack on South Korea would be their last war of any kind anywhere if they used nuclear weapons against South Korea in either situation— and they also know that just as quickly, nuclear missiles could be deployed from here to arrive in North Korea from the U.S. nearly as quickly from South Korea itself. So why would North Korea attack South Korea when they could just as easily, or more likely and conveniently, attack the USA, which they would no doubt do in either case . . . ~llaw
