In Fukushima’s shadow: Japan’s pivot back to nuclear

In the wake of the nuclear disaster in Fukushima, Japan shut down all of its nuclear power stations. Fifteen years on, the country is reconsidering that decision as the rise of AI has created massive demand for cheap low-carbon power. LLAW’s Nuclear World’s Thoughts Today . . .

It disturbs me that Japan — usually careful about what it does — would even consider the very idea of ever again using nuclear power after the Fukushima disaster. If they do, they are taking a considerable chance on their country’s future — as are every other country who believes that nuclear power can be safely used when they, and we, and all the rest of us should, by now, know better.

The possibilities of nuclear disasters, including using nuclear power plants as war weapons, is a very real thing as well as so many other threats, and, mathematically, the more nuclear power plants that exist, the more nuclear accidents and other threats like weather, earthquakes, floods, and other “acts of god” are always in play, and besides nuclear war there there are the constant threats of human greed over nuclear fuel — and it will become scarce — such as black marketing, terrorism, and governmental abuses of agreements and buy/sell operations and other financial disputes of all kinds from mining locations to “nuclear deterrence” that could create the very nuclear basis for nuclear war that we are already pathetically trying to avoid.

And then there is the question of how we rid ourselves of nuclear waste that has forced Japan, for instance, to dump their Fukushima waste in the Pacific Ocean because they already have no other place to get rid of it. And yet they are considering stockpiling more waste if they move forward again with nuclear power. . . . ~llaw
