PG&E’s nuclear power plant at Avila Beach near San Luis Obispo in Southern California

On My Mind Today:

How will we ever convince the “modern” world, soon to include AI (Artificial Intelligence) in a “leading role of educational, advisory leadership, technical direction, scientific advancement, and other automated control of the minds of human beings at every level. Signs of this control are already upon us, and many of us are evaluating AI as even a “savior” of humanity that can allow us to live in technological comfort without effort for our entire lifetimes. We are already bragging about how much more intelligent AI has suddenly become at university and other education levels, and of all kinds of professions and enterprises — offering advanced mental skills that are superior to the best of human mental capability.

And there is also already an aptly named nuclear power facility — the last commercial nuclear power plant in the entire state of California — that is announcing that they will use AI to operate and maintain safety and other operations standards of producing nuclear power.

That nuclear power plant is known as the “Devil’s Canyon” plant not far from San Luis Obispo located near Avila Beach on the Pacific coast. The plant is owned by Pacific Gas & Electric, a company that has the worst safety record and operations integrity in the history of California. They have burned down California cities, accidentally blown up parts of communities, poisoned a small town, and have violated both regulatory and other laws dozens of times, some of which have forced them into bankruptcies multiple times.

And yet we are allowing this irresponsible corporation to use untested as well as the questionable logic and self-correctional skills, of AI to operate a nuclear power plant that was, by law, supposed to have been mothballed – shut down – grandfathered – by September of this year. but has somehow convinced the California and United States political powers, as well as the nuclear industry and watchdogs, including the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to let PG&E continue to operate for the sake of California’s need for electricity.

So, I have to wonder why any cognizant and responsible human beings, given what we already know about PG&E and how little we know about AI, would even consider their dangerous experiment of allowing them to be the first to use AI to operate a substantial part of a nuclear power plant — especially in California, a state that has sometime ago blackballed the whole idea of nuclear power, essentially shutting the nuclear power industry down, up until now.

Perhaps careful conservation would have been a better choice?
